ack-ack
After flogging my last autobahn cruiser when the work dried up a good while back I've returned to commuting and am a bit under gunned. Had to resort to flogging the poor old Mk1 golf up and down the M20 but this was only meant to be a short term measure. Need new wheels. The requirements are: Good acceleration for doing sneaky moves round town, Ability to maintain motorway comfortably, 40 mpg preferably petrol, Low insurance, Less than £2k, german preferable but not essential, Suggestions welcomed gents. ack-ack
Makes sense the polo, performance wise it wont be far off the mk1 which is perfect for the drive but for its age, the poor old boys 30. I like the golf as its got no top end and as I have a tendency to boot it you struggle to get up into licence loosing loosing territory on the m-way. I can live with the insurance if the rest fits but my only worry is finding one that hasn't been thrashed. That really will be mission impossible. ferguson_tom
i think i own one of the most underated cars in the world a mazda 6 TS2 its got every gadget you could ask for inc cruise control for motorways, nice big car but still get 55mpg (driving like a granny) or 45mpg when driving quite hard it really is incredibly economincal and pretty fast 136bhp. I have done 25000 miles this year in mine and it is properly comfortable. Granted its the 2.0 turbo diesel not petrol as you prefer but for the money your looking at spending i dont think you can get a better car, when i kill this one i will buy another one. I did think of changing my car to something a bit smaller and more economical, a 1.6 tdci fiesta (due to the miles i do) and the insurance only dropped by £50 so did not bother. 12borejimbo
BMW 325i? Or an older 330 but I think you will struggle for 2k! Unless you gor the older e36 version, 238i, get a nice one for 2k, leather and all the bits. Nice cars for the money.
gixer1
Aud A3 ori a4 or an old style 320d bmw (e36ish) Edited November 20, 2011 by gixer1
HDAV
Seat Ibiza / Leon tdi or skoda Fabia tdi, same engines as the VW/ Audi but cheaper, lots of possibles but for £2k it's going to be older higher mileage stuff all the things you want are what everyone's after for a cruiser cdti vectra comfy good economy and loads about well specced SAAB 93 may be down to that sort of money or look at already done LPG preferably factory built Just noticed 40 mpg + petrol lol good luck! WGD
Under £2k I would be looking at an 02ish VW Passat 1.9TDI 130bhp. Ticks ALL the boxes.
paddywack12
Under £2k I would be looking at an 02ish VW Passat 1.9TDI 130bhp. Ticks ALL the boxes. Apart from the petrol one
ack-ack
Apart from the petrol one I don't think the petrol one is realistic. Its got to DERV me thinks now but one with proportionally better fuel economy to offset the difference in fuel price. Beardo
Under £2k I would be looking at an 02ish VW Passat 1.9TDI 130bhp. Ticks ALL the boxes. bar the petrol issue/ i have a 55 plate 2.0 TDI 170 and it's fantastic - my mate has the older model and for you price range it's a winner. the Bora is worth looking at as well due to is relative unpopularity (saloon golf essentially) they come up at great prices for what you get. Seriously though I'd be looking at anything with the VAG 150bhp 1.8t engine (passat, golf gti, Leon, a3, a4, a6), the list is extensive but you might struggle on the Audis. That engine is reliable, good on juice and parts are cheap coz its more common than Shannon Matthews' mum. Not a bora though - as clarkson once said it's a perverts car. It's nothing special to behold, so noone will notice you parked outside the school gates, but its also quick so you can get away when they do... I've got the same car, 48mpg and I drive it hard. Got it in feb, just hit 30k on the clock and regularly done 3 hour drives and get out comfy as I started. Good on corners, excellent acceleration - could have had an a3 a4 BMW 3 or 5 (basic spec a4 or bmw5, any spec bmw3 or a3) but chose the mazda over them all. Colleague has the same - said it's not feat in snow. 2wd and wide tyres I guess.

The annoying thing is that probably the best car for the job is one like that silver thing that you've been running around in. I bet that runs on the sniff of an oily rag and costs buttons to tax and insure. How does Clarkson get away with saying stuff like that, hells teeth!! Theres a lot of love for Passat so thats what I'm going to be looking at me thinks. Had a scan round on flea bay and theres a couple of belters but they're way up North. Thanks for all your suggestions gents. Anybody want to buy a Mk1 Golf GTI per chance?
