sako751sg
Havent been oot for good wee while so last week we thought we would make for a mixed back this weekend. Woke up yesterday morning but it was lashing doon so festered till 11am when it cleared up and then headed away for a walk with the shotguns.Absolutely baltic, blowing a gale with the odd snow/sleet shower made it less than ideal for Mac with the .410,but he did manage a single pheasants but had a few misses where he should have done better.A good few birds but challenging shooting and we ended up with 9 pheasants which was a cracking bag. There were a few hundred pinks on the stibble but nay chance of a chap at them. Went straight from there to a wee splash of water to try for a duck or two just on dark.Once again it was freezing with the thermometer showing 1 degree but with the wind it was bitter.Left it to the last before getting oot the Jeep but with only a 50 yard walk it was fine.Just settled in when the mallard started coming in from all directions and again not great conditions for the wee man. They were wheeling about and splashing in but with the low light he couldnt get on them so i just started chapping away.It was short and sweet and after about 5 mins we had 7 down,Macs only shot was at a widgeon and although he did connect it carried on away.Once again a cracking bit of sport from a wee puddle most folk wouldnt even think about feeding and trying to take some duck in. Next we headed home and swapped the shotguns for the rifles hoping to christen the new CZ455 and the new Zeiss on the .243 with a rabbit or two and maybe a fox.Long story short, the rabbits were unbelievably flighty for the weather, but we did manage 4 rabbits and a hare with the .17,and confess that the hare was really a flapped rabbit in my eyes.Havent shot hares for years now and wasnt too pleased aboot this one,and Mac was even less impressed.Saying that, there is no shortage here now and they have increased hugely this last 5 years or so.Lamped 4 foxes in all,but 3 were wary and either kept distance or legged it but one was squeaked in to aboot 60 yards but on pulling the trigger i remembered that if you dont put one up the spout it wont go bang.By the time i cycled he was legging it and went double that into some rashy marsh ground down in the valley.I laid down with the .243 and Mac kept the lamp on him,and after a good ten minutes he finally gave me a clear view with him sitting front on,and on the shot there was a huge thud and i saw him drop forward out of sight. We both went down with the hand held lamp but after 3 steps into the rashes and both legs in over the gaitors a tactical withdrawal was made back to the Jeep and home.I know his lights are out but its always fine to get the body but not this time.We were out for aboot 4 hours and it was sleet or snow the whole time and it was great to get back into the hoose. Watched the boxing and got the head down at 5am on the sofa with Mac snoring on the chair and 2 hours later the phone alarm went off as we said we would try for a bit of venison for the farmers and the freezer.Like a pair of zombies we got the gear on but when the door was opened everything was white but a fine clear sky.I can be sure of plenty of does on all bit of ground, but wasnt sure if the snow would have put them into cover but the first place we came to there was a wee buck kid and two does grazing the side of a wood less than a hundred yards away.Wind was perfect so it was an easy five yard stalk and lie down and wait for them to present for a shot. The kid has sensed me but instead of going away he started walking straight towards us.When he was less than 50 i squeaked and he stopped dead and i put one into his head and he dropped on the spot.I swung onto the does and the first was perfect broadside so one in the engine room dropped her withoot another pace. The 3rd doe stood face on,so another headshot was the order and again straight down.3 perfect shots, head and engine room and i didnt even have to go "chasing" them. .The next 2 hoors was spent in a blizzard gralloching, plucking, skinning and butchering but well worth it.All in a top weekend. Just like to say the CZ455 is a cracking bit of kit and the Zeiss, courtesy of a cracking deal from Shotgunspud is absolutely outstanding esp in the lamp. ATB Cheers fella.I notice we are all shy in that pic.Rabs paw over his eyes is a cracker right enough. He maybe realised something huge was behind us going by the gap between its eyes with the flash. Im pretty sure that kids do not become sexed until a year old,and are known as kids up till then for culling purposes. The reasoning is that you are not leaving orphaned kids to struggle through the winter.Always try and get the young first to prevent orphaning,as last year took it toll on kids with mum never mind without.
