grasshopper
Got a call from the Shoot Captain last week, he’s seen 2 Fox whilst walking his dogs and having a quick shine. Next night I’m there and setting up. I placed the Fox Pro some 65 paces up the wall and returned to my chosen spot, loaded the rifle, chose a Vixen call, set it away and picked up the NV to spot with..only to see a Fox standing looking at the Little Green Fox on the wall calling like mad. Shot was not on as Foxy was too close to the wall but soon moved into the field.Still no shot as all I could see where stalks of Barley between me and it. Patiently I waited and eventually it came towards me.Next time you stop, your mine I thought, but it didn’t,well, not until I shouted OI! I did forget to aim slightly higher with him being so close and just caught the bottom of his chest, but down he went. Big Dog Fox. On Boxing Day’s shoot, a small Vixen was shot in the wood I shot 1 from a few weeks ago,and when I walked it at 1pm next day,I put a big Dog fox up….moved into there quick. That night I’m up on the Bales opposite the wood with the caller going. Fox calls produced nothing so tried a Hare call. After about 10mins of seeing only Hares and Rabbits,I’m thinking of changing the call. I haven’t checked for only 1-2 mins, but when I do,Charlie is actually on the wall, gateway was very muddy and he obviously didn’t wish to get his feet dirty. Some 55yds away looking straight at me. He scarpered across the field and into the wood not allowing me a shot. Left it a night due to wind and rain and tried again tonight.Nothing appeared from the bales so went round to where I shot the Dog Fox last week,as Shoot Captains son had spotted a pair last night. I park at his and check the 1st field from his garden to see a Fox looking at me only 90yds away. Wind is different this week so I set up at the dividing wall of 2 stubble fields.Caller is 80yds away and I’m at the gateway, sheltering from the wind. Dog Fox call is set away and a set of eyes appear after 10 mins.Upwind so that’s good.NV is attached and I follow him in. As I look away to judge the distance,I can’t pick him up again so have to remove the NV,re-focus and find him in this field now.He must have speeded up when he got closer to the call. Anyway,NV is re-attached and I pick him up circling downwind of me.A quick OI and he stops for that fatal last look. After finding and checking him,I return to my spot, settle myself and set a Hare call away. I’m leaning against a stone gatepost and give it a minute before checking, but when I do there’s a Fox coming straight at me. This 1 is smaller so figure Vixen. When she’s only 25yds away, she turns 90degrees and heads off down the wall. Rifle is standing on the Bi-Pod, so I add the NV and drop onto it,again some long grass so I shuffle sideways to clear it. I pick her up and she moves away from the caller but keeps looking quizzically at it…Fatal for her,as I hear that resounding thud and she drops instantly. Tonights set up.. Good NV is devastatingly effective,it just requires more patience than lamping Yes they do get a bit to get the hang of Is that a Leupold got mine on vx3 but its better on my cheap Raptor Do you use a lamp with IR to spot with, the firefly to strong only lights up center.Might get Julian to up mag and use as monocular and get another one. Yeah,VX3 4.5 x 14.No problems at all with it I only use the laser, lights the eyes up way better than a lamp and ir filter.Farmer uses 1 when we're out and i spot better without it. Don't find it a problem to use, becomes 2nd nature to re-focus and attach.Biggest problem is the field of view being small,so picking the Fox up can be a problem at times.Usually have my bud along with his NV and he follows and directs me onto it as he can see the laser beam...so much easier when there's 2 of you. coyotemaster
Nice Job!! The Foxpro is good tool, I was wondering if anyone used vocalization to call them in. It seems to work well with their canine cousins that have heard the distress call a few too many times. I know that I have called some old dogs in that would not bother looking up for a rabbit distress by using howls and challenges.

The first 1 came to investigate the Dog Fox call. It's mating season here for them so that and Vixen calls have brought me a few in recently. Vixen call actually accounted for a Vixen few weeks back..terrotorial thing again i presume, only the 2nd Vixen to check it out but plenty of Dogs have fallen to it
