Decoys White Neck and Wing Bands

Afternoon all,

I have just been reading John Batley's quality book "The Pigeon Shooter". He comments on the white neck and wing bands on the pigeon as a major attractant to other Pigeons.

My decoys have these markings (Obviously) but to my mind they are not as clear and distinct as the real birds, anyone got any tips on how to improve these markings without making a mess of my decoys?

I am also reading the same book. And have just bought my first dozen decoys. Thought the same as you. I went to my local art shop and bought a tin of white matt spray paint (about 3 quid) and gave them a quick blast on the wings only. The spray is a bit more even and wont blob like smig's erection fluid? Having said that, I tried them out (and blanked) am now of the opinion that you need to be in the right place first the rest will follow regardless of how prominent the bars are. As John B's book emphasises, field craft first.

Thats my 10 pence worth anyway.

Have you (or anyone else for that matter) noticed any difference if you have given them the tipex treatment?

Steve

You are correct, being in the right place is paramount.

Doesnt matter if you have all the newest, latest , best looking gear that money can buy if your fieldcraft isnt worth a toss!

Cant say i have ever noticed any difference useing Tipex i just prefer it , comes with an applicator, shows up well and lasts and just takes seconds to do with one coat.

Some ornithologists think that when Pigeons are flocked up in winter the wing bars are actually a alarm signal as the birds take flight.

I went through a phase 30+yrs ago with this theory, (white bars/neck flashing)...

I made all sorts of little flag systems to flash the white the same as the pigeon flicking it's wings now & again, but with not much success TBH.

Did a few different experiments...flash or not to flash

& got better results without flagging... :look:

So the above quote could have some element of truth.

I used Tipex on both the neck and wing bars, I noticed that on rape that was well developed for this time of year they did stand out more than what they did when I bought them and I did have a few birds make a quick direction change to come onto my decoys. So i'll be sticking with Tipex when they need a touch up.
