I'm in the process of completing my FAC application and after struggling to decide on a calibre for fox control (223 or 22-250) i decided to give my Feo a ring for some advice as he knows the land and this is my first application.

To my surprise he said not to worry about a specific calibre and to write .22CF + SOUND MOD this he says will leave me with the choice of various rifles depending on what i decide later on, sounds great to me but has anyone else actually got this on their FAC

Years ago I had two .22 rf on ticket. One for sporting and the other for prone target shooting. When the renewal came up I contacted the firearms manager and told him that I wanted a 22 cf but didn’t know which one I wanted. He told me just to put down 22cf and an amount of 22cf ammo which would enable me to get what I wanted and then to send the cert back in for adjustment went I had got one. I then went and bought a 223 along with about sixty rounds of ammo. Problem arose when I went in to another dealer to buy some more 223 rounds. They looked at the cert and said that they couldn’t sell me any as my cert said 22cf and as far as they were concerned that was hornet. They even rang up the firearms dept and the person that they asked said that it meant hornet also. (case of left hand not knowing what right hand is about). I got in car and went straight down to police HQ and had it out with them. Cert was duly altered to say 223 and more lead was purchased ( from a different dealer) >> Conclusion >> get cert off to fire arms dept as soon as you buy a weapon and get it on the system and at the same time apply for plenty of lead and also several hundred expanding missiles (bullet tips) for when you decide to go into reloading. (They come in boxes of a 100 tips) because you cant buy tips(soft point or hollow point) without it being on your ticket. And this will take time and by then the rules might be a lot more difficult.

Yep, I have .22CF on mine  I initially tied to get .20cf but Leices will only allow generic .22CF

As above leic allow 22cf as a slot so your choices are 22 hornet/222/223/22-250 , I opted for the 222.

So what happens when i decide on a rifle? does it just get written on by the RFD like on a SGC or does it go back to have it written on ticket?

Then say i change my mind in a year or so and want to swap the first rifle lets say a 223 for a new rifle in 22-250, does it need a variation

Being new to this i want to make sure i'm up to speed before the next visit from the FLO

thanks :good:

Your RFD will fill out the FAC, you notify the Police by letter or e-mail (depending), you don't need to send your FAC in.

And yes, if you want to change, you need to either

A) Sell the gun in your possession and send the FAC back to 'clear' the slot or

B) Ask for another slot for another rifle if you can justify it, or if they are nice and will let you have a temp slot so you aren't without a rifle

It won't need a variation per se as long as they send the FAC back with .22CF, but if you know what you are buying you may aswell have .22-250 on it, the reason they give generic .22CF is because you are unsure what you want now, and what will come up in your price bracket, once you've decided I think its highly likely you will be expected to specify calibre.

Ahh now I understand, of coarse if or when I decide to change then I'll no longer need the .22CF as I will have made up my mind what I want!

As with most things, it's easy when you know how

Thanks

Well I got a .223 on my license bought that rifle the. Applied for a .22-250 as a dedicated nightvision setup so got both on my license now just deciding what .22-250 to buy now so why not go for both if you don't end up using one as they are both very close calibres just use whichever slot you don't use and swap it for another calibre a 1 for 1 for free simples. Lol. Good luck.

Good idea but with the OP being a new applicant I think he'll struggle to get two centrefires on first application.

No it's Paul Mummery, really good bloke as well, met him on a few occasions now and is always helpful and seems to know his stuff

Not met him. I'm really impressed with Leicestershire police firearms dept. They are always happy to speak to you and seem to use thier common sense.

Just wish they would hurry up and post my FAC out, but they are extremely busy at the moment. My application went in at the beginning of November!

Could you drop me a PM when you get your ticket? I'd be very intrested to know roughly how long leics are taking at the minute, the last person I know (leics) waited over six months...

You won't need a PM, you'll hear me singing from the rooftop.

I had .22 rimfire on my ticket before I bought my .22lr so could have got a wmr.

It's nice to see a sensible approach from your FLO

I've got .22RF on my ticket. I'm sure I asked for .22LR. Its a shame I don't want a WMR as I've got an HMR.

Just put in for .222. Be great if it came back as .22CF especially since I've just seen a secondhand heavy barrelled Tikka 595 in 22-250 at a good price but Christmas is over so I won't get my hopes up.

Of course it never occured to me to ask for .22CF. Maybe if we don't ask we don't get?
