Average distance?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone here ever guesstimated their average distance on shot vermin?

I would guess at;

Deer 75yards

Fox 100yards

Rabbit 50yds

Winged stuff has to be around 30yds.

The above is just plucked out of my tiny brain, sure I can remember the few long shots but when I think about it there is much more close in stuff.

Funny thing is as I get older I want to get closer anyway!

How's it for you?

Deer - About 100 yards with .243 (Furthest one to date a Roe Buck (Heart and lung shot) about 175 yards)

Fox - Average 80 yards to 120 yards with .243 (Furthest one to date about 200 yards)

Rabbits - Average 75 yards - 100 yards with 17HMR (Furthest one cehst shot) at about 180 yards)

I'm sure that I could go beyond these distances quite safely but I prefer to use field craft to get as close as possible to my quarry so as to "minimise" misses or poor shot plcaement.

My average distances are probably a lot less than many think, or post about!

I'd certainly place my average fox at well under 100yards, and I'm confident my furthest is less than 300 yards !

I don't know is the answer, I'm not interested in stalking in close to test myself, I take the appropriate shot with the appropriate tool, long or short.

That's a tough one, but at a guess I'd say...

Deer - 30 yards

Fox - 75 yards

Rabbit - 75 yards

The biggest rush I get from this sport by a long way is getting right in on Deer. I could shoot them further out but it's a brilliant feeling to get in so close to them. Foxes and Rabbits I tend to shoot more because they need shooting. I still enjoy it but getting right in close to them doesn't give me the same enjoyment and I don't let them walk away anywhere near as often!

Brilliant gents.

Long shots are rare, when I was young they were more important somehow than now.

Make all the talk about high BC's for bullets seem a bit pointless.

The old cartridges seem more and more appealing to me, like 30wcf or 222 and Hornet.

It's all good fun, keep up the good work

i have to be a bit careful as there's only one or two places i can safely take deer and fox out with a centrefire, max i'd say was 200 yds but i haven't had the need to go that far as i can lay up in cover, so 100yds max? rabbit i've taken at around 200yds on occaision when layed up again, but zeroed for that range, on walk about 70ish yds is the max i'd stick to.

all depends what ground you shoot over. round here in the midlands the fields are a fair old size on some permissions and the average range of foxes shot when we have been out are 150 yards. yes we haver shot some closer. But on average they are always around the 150 to 200 mark.

guess they feel safe out on the big open fields when not sure to come to call.

Absolutly, terrain sure does influence a person averages.

I remember going Hind culling up Scotland, I wanted to take my 30wcf Marlin 336 but let my friends talk me into taking my 243, "it'll all be long shots" they all said! All my shots for 6 deer were less than 200yds! The Marlin would of been fine! I agreed with my friends that I thought as them that the hill would mean long shots but as it turned out with a little bit of careful stalking and hunting it was easy to get close and certainly more interesting.

Because of the size of my land i keep everything in close so nothing impressive here. it's mainly padlock and a wood somy first poi is zeroed at 17m which is a headshot on a rabbit at about 45m before have to start worrying about holding over.

With shotgun-

Fox- 20-25m

Rabbit- 15-30m

with .22lr

fox- 15-30m

rabbit- 15-45m

Shaun, you are too modest mate! I'm sure that if you had checked it with a good range finder you would have found that it was more like 893 yards! (I assume that it was a good clean head shot at such close range?):lol::lol:

well it may have been,

Yes it was a head shot, i dont like to stretch the range to far as i like clean kills
