955i
Hi all, I am re-doing my bedroom (hate woodchip wallpaper, bloody stuff is welded on!!) and I want to put a wavy edged shelf across the chimney breast. Have looked round the DIY shops and they only do pine, but I want something a bit nicer that I can shape and wax. Does anyone have any nice bits of wood that they have no use for near me (NG16), or any suggestions of where to source some? Would like something like oak if possible, or anything that I can bring a nice grain out of. Needs to be around 55" long and I guess 6-8" wide. Let me know if you can help Thanks

Ricko
Consider using a thick scaffolding plank. Wire brush it to raise the grain, sand it with 120 grade, stain it with Sikkens. Pointless spending loads on oak for a shelf in a bedroom.
woodcock11
Consider using a thick scaffolding plank. Good technical advice but this is a bedroom with a chimney breast - it just might be a very grand and impressive bed chamber for which nothing less than oak [or similar] will do - certainly not a situation for a bit of MDF Edited January 18, 2012 by woodcock11
Imperfection
You'd need to go to a specalist, but i would suggest tiger maple because in my opinion its the prettiest looking timber.Use Google to see how good it looks.
whiskymac
Pippy Oak or Burr Elm. Rosewood is also nice but probably too much for a shelf , nice for inlays though. Again you would need a specialist....John Boddy Timber used to have a catologue full of exotic timbers but not sure what they carry these days in the more exotic stuff given current climate. Had a lot of oak and ash off them in the past and they were good to deal with. They are in Boroughbridge so about 1 1/4 from Derbyshire. BRYAN3
Its good to have wood in the bedroom. Keeps the missus happy. Parana pine is nice with a very varied range of colours. Used for window boards,so already prepared and available in wider than normal widths. ATB-Bryan.
Medic1281
I'd look at a reclamation yard. The one by me has lots of finished oak planks in various sizes and styles. ATB Phil
jpbeaver
Go on to arbtalk.co.uk they have a milling section on there where someone will be able to help. If you travel up to the lakes or north Lancashire at all I could sort you a piece out.
955i
Think I may have it sorted. A friend took a 20' beam out of his living room so I am going to cut that up and see if it is suitable
