Hello all, due to a shoulder injury i purchased myself a 20 bore over and under, went for a walk about today and thought about trying my luck on some roosting pigeons.

Sadly the did not want to play so after 2 hours and not a shot i went for a wander just before i lost the light, i managed to flush a hen bird that came rocketing over my left side and began to climb sharply, swinging the little gun i squeezed the trigger and she dropped like a stone, im pretty impressed with the " ladies " gun

please have a look at the link below ( some other of my shooting pics are on here as well :good: )

yes it is, lovely little gun, Baikal 27 EM- 1C multichoke, ejetor and 3" chamber, its very light and has virtually no recoil, im a fan of the Russian guns , bombproof and dont cost the earth. :good:

Due to my Browning125 12 gauge having a broken firing pin I recently had to use a Baikal single trigger U/O on one of our Syndicates driven days, I hit nearly every high bird I fired at and I could not go wrong!!

I used the gun again last Saturday and shot equally as well as the first day I used it - the other shoot members commented on how well I was shooting. I have another 2 days left of this season and I know which gun I will be using!!

Mmm - shooting a hen pheasant at dusk - not really sure if that is something I would want to boast about - maybe there is more to the story but you are not - as it appears - doing yourself any favours.....

And a 20 bore is definitely not a "ladies" gun [as you choose to call it]. There are many very good male shots who shoot with a 20 bore out of preference and I know of many ladies who shoot with the same who would give most male guns a serious run for their money when it comes to skill & accuracy.

you misread me, i shot the pheasant just after 4pm, the permission i was on is quite large and takes me over an hour to walk around, hence me saying i went for a walk around before it got dark, my comment for shooting a ladies gun comes from me being ribbed by a friend of mine who believes they are not effective as the 12 bore :good:

...however having read the post i can see where the idea would come from, my fault for not being clear :good:

If you haven't used a 20 bore in anger before they may suprise you quite a bit. Keep going with it would be my advice.

I'm now using 2 20 bores ( a Ceasar Guerini Maxum and a Beretta Urika 2) for game and pigeon, my 12 bores are largely unused. I would recommend to anyone switching from a 12 to a 20 bore for live quarry shooting. Some folk are strong advocates of the 12 bore which is fine.

Fair comment - sorry to take away from the triumph of shooting your first pheasant using a 20 bore - 4.00 pm is in plenty good time and still allows pheasants to get safely up to roost.

Wish you loads more success with the 20 - maybe you will stick with it? I am shooting with a 12 bore but may well "downsize" as I get ever older.

Hope the pigeons will be more obliging too next time out - that is the trouble with pigeons - they are too darn clever.......

All the best.

20bore is a fantastic gun,

can do most what a 12 can. but if you reload, load a 3/4oz load at 1100fps, the softest cartridge ever. certainly one recomended with those who are uncompatable with recoil.

i use a 12 exclusively, because i load it to whatever.

you can reload 20gauge upto 32 grams for the 3" or 21 or even 18grams of shot. speed isnt totally essential for a good load, but dont expect 32g of shot at 1400fps not to hurt.

i keep loads at sub 1200fps, and they shoot rather nice. clays should be 1300fps.
