Wild Rabbit Infection/parasite?

Whils skinning and jointing last nights rabbits, I came across this in 2 of them. The 1st was a fluid filled sac on the knee of the rear leg. I cut it off and it was filled with what I can only describe as 'very small frogspawn'. The second rabbit I found this on was not visible until I was removing the loin. Whilst cutting down the spine i saw a clear fluid, I looked, and I must have gone though a similar sac, either in the loin meat or between the meat and the spine.

I have no photo's - sorry.

Needless to say, both bunnies were binned.

Just Google'd your reply. I feel rather nauseous now , and there were pictures - spot on you :good: .

'larval stage of Multiceps serialis. These fluid-filled cysts differ from those of T. pisiformis in that they are larger, elongate and each contains many white floating objects (tapeworm heads). They are located under the skin or between muscle layers rather than inside the body cavity'

interesting gutting a rabbit today i found a "bag about the size of a small tomato filled with a yellowish clear fluid I just thought it was a full bladder and ignored it was this what i found ?

If it was in the groin area it was probably the bladder. As soon as you shoot a rabbit make sure you pee it out by running your thumbs hard down towards the groin alongside the groin/belly

  • 2 weeks later...

I only came across worms in rabbits once when shooting & ferreting in the Chilterns , horrid things & I binned em ! & would not risk feeding them to the ferrets in case I passed any thing on to them ! , if in dout bin em & anything that looks suspect ! . I remember in the shooting times many moons ago reading about worms in rabbits & I think the great Fred J Taylor said they seem to turn up in rabbits that are near fields of sheep ? .

No body in their right mind would want to risk getting infected with these ghastly things ! ,

lets hope some one with qaulified medical knowledge on PW can guide us on this ????.

One last word a chap I knew years ago was living & fighting with the guerillas in the mountains of El Salvador ate in properly cooked pork & when he came back to the UK he was not alone !& it took more than one trip to the tropical deseases hospital in London to evict his squatter !!! Enjoy your rabbit ! FOOD FOR THOUGHT !!!!! :hmm::sick:
