Just a worry i had the other day.

I recently bought a new shotgun and the shop I bought it from gave me an envelope with my firearms office address on it and a form to send them with regards to my ownership of the new gun. The form was pre filled in as they had printed it off.

I posted this first class the next day and that’s the end of it really. The shop filled all the details in on my certificate.

My worry is, is that I haven’t actually heard anything from my firearms office? Should I of?

PS: my knowledge of new ownership is limited as I have only ever had the one gun.

You'll be fine.

When the RFD send off their forms, if your licencing department haven't received your piece of paper, they'll call.

Given the number of forms they'll receive, I think they'd do well to acknowledge all of them.

You can call them to check on the system, if you're worried.

They don't contact you to tell you it has been signed to you (my force do not) I always do a follow up call about 3-4 weeks later to make sure they did, glad I did the last time as I had left it longer and they still had not added the gun I bought 3 months previoulsy. they were extremely back logged though at this point.

I have just submitted an on-line changeover to the Lincolnshire office which included my email address as requested. From this I assumed I would get an automatic confirmation of receipt.

I didn't so I 'phoned and was told that they do not confirm receipt and was told not to worry about it.

As some else said, when the RFD's copy gets there there will be a cross check.

Don't worry, they are not likely to contact you, they'd be very busy if they replied to every notification they got! You could ring them to be sure but don't worry about it, very few things actually get lost in the post.

Next time send it by recorded delivery, or if using e-mail make sure you get a receipt. It is not uncommon for something to go wrong at their end and for it to get lost in the system, and if this happens it's good to be able to show them the receipt, basically proving that you aren't the one at fault if they say they never received it.

Just something to remember for next time.

I thought you had to send all gun transfers via recorded delivery?

You do. There is a piece of legislation which became law last year makes it lawful to do it by 'permitted electronic means', I think it's referred to (emai, fax, etc), but I don't think this has been implimented yet. There had to be a ministerial consultation first on what means are acceptable which hasn't taken place, I don't think.

Yes, should do, I have just renewed my coterminus, that took some sorting out as they hadn't got everything straight.

Send everything recorded or email, and KEEP records.

Fortunately I had, we had a chat and everything was fine! :good:
