njc110381
I'm feeling a bit unsure of myself today. Now I'm home I think I made a poor choice when I was out stalking. I had a couple of guys out Squirrel shooting with me and when we got to the area the Deer sit in I went ahead to perhaps take one as the other lads pushed them past. Well as always there were plently of Deer. I counted 8 before I got to the point of going ahead to take one - safe shots, angles etc just weren't up to much. Anyway, I went ahead of the other guys and got down prone. Sure enough a young Roe trotted out in front of me - I placed the crosshair on it but let it go. It looked in really good condition. Then I had the choice of all choices to make... An older Roe trotted out, looked a bit shabby to be honest but then out of the corner of my eye I spotted some other movement - a Fox! There are Sheep on this land, but I needed some Venison to cook for some family we're having over in two weeks. What to do?! I led there scoping one then the other, then back again. It felt like a lifetime passed before I pulled the trigger, but I pulled it on the Roe. Now I can't help thinking I made a poor call. The shot angle wasn't ideal so I lost a shoulder and made a bit of a mess, and as fast as I can reload my combi when I'm in a hurry the Fox obviously didn't hang around! It ran off and I couldn't take it Now I'm thinking I should have shot the Fox as it's Lambing time, and I recon there's more chance that the Deer would have stopped to a shout even after the first shot had taken the Fox. The land owner wasn't bothered either way - he dislikes the Deer just as much as the Foxes but in my mind I wish I'd done things differently. What would you have done? :look: Edited March 21, 2012 by njc110381

Redgum
I would have done exactly the same as you if I needed the venison, sometimes its hard to call, like when your in a highseat and fox's trot by one after another but you don't want to scare potential dinner, darkness falls and not a deer in sight. Its nearly the end of the doe season but Mr fox doesnt have the same luxuries, there will be another day.
scolopax
I would have shot the yearling and left the big doe. The fox should be delt with by the staff
southeastpete
i usually shoot edible things above non edible. Im doing the farmer a service, but also looking out for myself. Its my hobby and sport but also puts dinner on the plate. I wouldnt worry about your decision, but if it bugs you at all, get out tonight and try a half hours squeaking. if he's active in the area you should see him...
