bode.boden
I know this is going to sound daft but is there any way you can prevent puppies breeding too soon without the obvious of separating them, as they really are inseperable !! our bitch is just 6 months old and dog is just 5 months old ?? we intend to breed them next year just the once. any ideas would be most welcome !! :hmm:

bode.boden
how do you know they will be worth breeding from? They both have excellent 5 generation pedigree's and are un-related. bitch is a blue roan, and dog is a lemon roan, super temperaments, hopefully they will also be good gundogs. they will also have all the necessary vet checks before bred. pontbeck
I apologise for the previous post, which ,on reflection is a little harsh, but to quote a previous poster ` How do you know they will be worthy of breeding from `. Have you thought who will buy the pups and for what reason ? They are only pups themselves. Are you going to trial them? Do you trial ? There are lots of pups out there waiting for homes that have good backgrounds in trailing or proving themselves in the field without pups being produced because people think it`s a good idea. bode.boden
hi Bill, firstly no we dont trial, and understand partly where you are coming from, my cocker spaniel pups are show cockers and we are not going to go into breeding for gain or profit, like i said our bitch will only have 1 planned litter and hopefully be bought by people like ourselves who adore the breed !!! before we purchased our cockers i did many checks looking to find any within dog homes that needed re-homing to no availe. we purchased we believe responsabley from reputable breeders, but the dogs we have now will be used and trained for use in flushing and retreveing by ourselves, but mostly are our family pets. As you will know these dogs are intelligent and energetic and love the exercise!! hope this answers your questions.

bode.boden
quote / if you do wont to use your bitch for breeding you must allow the first and sometimes second season to pass most bitches go in to season twice per year we intend to breed her in her 4 season she will be around 2 years old we have bread dogs befour {not cockers} but at 2 years old and she went on to live till she was 18 years old only after advice not ------off
Siberian Tiger
Threads like this can be a bit controversial, especially given the current climate and the number of dogs in rescue :( It is generally accepted practice to wait until a bitch is at least 2 years old before mating, and not over the age of 8. Health testing usually involves eyes, and PRA. I think there is now an advisory note for gonio and hip scoring for cockers. If you intend to register your puppies with the KC then it may well be worth checking up on current testing as it is likely they will not register without Most potential responsible pet owners, regardless of whether the dog is to primarily be a pet or worker, will ask for proof of health testing and positive results prior to wanting to purchase - and will choose the healthiest ones, with the best temperament that are fit for purpose. You may have a lot of competition.

bruno22rf
Jesus H-the guy was only asking for help.Ultimately they are his dogs and unless someone knows better he has'nt done anything wrong-quite the opposite-he is asking for advice to prevent harming his dogs.Theres a whole world of deliberate cruelty and neglect out there, why are we hurling abuse at one of our own.
bode.boden
thanks bruno somebody in our corner for a change anyway after a lot of talking me and the wife have decided to get the dog casterated on friday
mudpatten
A laudable decision. Your problem, which you would have known if you knew the first thing about dogs or had taken the trouble to consult a vet, is that no vet will castrate a five month old puppy. Under most circumstances the earliest a dog could be castrated is at about a year old. The breeding of average dogs which contribute nothing to the improvement of the breed by owners who are ignorant of the most basic tenets of dog ownership, driven purely by greed is the root cause of many of the dog worlds current problems. Sorry to be so blunt but you really need to think about what you do next. And you still have`nt solved your original problem.
bode.boden
well here we go again ! firstly i was a guest on this forum for a couple of months before deciding to be a member after reading all the good advice members were giving to people with limited experience in the training and breeding of their dogs and knowing we were going to purchase our lovley cockers seemed like the best place to see what advice we would get from cocker owners. ok maybe we could have worded our first post better with a bit more thought and reflection. we do seek advice from reading, internet, friends and most of all our vet as we do not claim to KNOW IT ALL !! but do not feel we are complete novices either, having had animals (dogs, cats, birds of prey, ferrets and smaller house pets that our children had when they were younger) over a span of many many years. After a lengthy conversation with my wife and our vet as to the best way of causing the least amount of stress to our lovely cockers and not wanting an un-planned pregnancey in a bitch that was too young,or having to rely on (what some use) an abortion injection . There is no special age for neutering but where possible wait until the dog is fully grown, our vet whom we have been with for a considerable time advised this was the best way forward. some might say why buy a dog and bitch together !! but my wife having bought me the bitch as a much wanted gift, fell in love with a dog she saw a month later !! cant help what you fall in love with lol. dog had his op today and is doing really well with the care given by vet and wifey.
