I read the Shotgun world thread months ago - apparently they are so good they shoot round corners - drop out and clean themselves - whistle and they put themselves back in - also they compensate for not enough or too much lead -

I was going to get some for my 391 but then realised it wasn't gun or chokes causeing probem.

;):) :) :):D :D :D

Dave

Hey up Dave,

I've got a spare Optima U2 that you can borrow and see what you think of it if you'd like to give it a test run.

PM me your address and i'll pop it in the post to you :good:

I have been reading about these chokes on Shotgun World. Whats so special about them?

Mike - I was intending cutting down on my stock of chokes as it reached about 30. As I only used 6 of them, I decided to thin them out.I did sell Nicky T. some Optima chokes a couple of years ago - top lad.

Last year, I saw a couple of Muller chokes for sale and bought them from Nicky T. They were the right money and I was bored - so took the plunge. They are the lightest chokes I have ever come across. They don't actually feel like metal. Superbly machined as well. What I did notice - apart from the actual kills - was the lack of residue. I have never had chokes which were so easy to keep clean or didn't even needing cleaning. Don't know why and I don't care, but I am not knocking it. :good: :good:

I think it's all psychological and marketing :hmm: A 20 thou constriction is a 20 thou constriction no matter what brand of choke, unless a Muller 20 thou is slightly tighter than what it's marked

Any each to their own, the only useless choke I have ever had were those little Browning one's that came with the 325. You needed to put 1/2 and 3/4 in at least to shoot anything over 20 yards away.

Mike - I should have really said - I use 3/8 and 3/8 for sporting. Skeet and skeet for skeet. The other two chokes are used by my son in my Salvinelli - 1/4 and 1/4.

The Mullers are 3/4 and full - used them on sporting to try them out - impressed - but now reserved for if I shoot DTL or ABT.

I have experience with almost every choke out there, Beretta and Miroku/Browning, they're all good. What's special about Mullers is they take the messing about out of choke changing. They only do 4 constrictions, U1 through to U4. A competition shooter needs two U3's and a U2, nothing more. ;)

They also happen to be light, stay clean and stay tight, that may or may not be important to you.

My Optima chokes are light, they stay clean and if I apply a bit of pressure to the Teague key they stay tight too.

What's so special about only doing four constrictions when 1/4 and 3/4 is one of the most versatile choke combinations going if you have a barrel selector.

What a lot of people forget that each constriction is only equivalent to five yards difference plus or minus in keeping the spread of the pattern the same.

Not very far is it?

I'm not convinced at all.

Mike - forget the four constrictions. They say you only need four because they only make four. However, they are very light, look better made than the Optimas and remarkably residue free.

Other than that - stick with the Optimas. I bought mine on a whim and don't regret it, but do I really need them??????????????????????????????
