gamekeeper1960
they are bloody horrible lol I would'nt worry to much about which one its more about how much its going to to cost to insure. bedwards1966
Any cheap little Jap thing will be OK. Before you look at them much, check what the insurance will cost, you might suddenly find your 6k budget is reduced to 1-2k to leave money for the insurance! ferguson_tom
I am 22 and just got a nissan terrano, lost all my NCD last year when i cut some up at a roundabout. Still only paying £850 on the insurance and that includes commuting and an annual mileage of 25000. So cant seeing it being a lot more for you probably cheaper if you have NCD. Dont think the smaller the car the cheaper the insurance becuase sometimes it aint. If you are looking at the smaller 4x4s we have a freelander and apart from the reliability issues i think its the best one in that size of car, comfortable, quiet, tows well and capable off road. If looking for a bigger 4x4 i would personally go for a shogun or half decent ford ranger pick up. Wildfowler12
I bought an X-Trail when I was 19. I can't remember the exact insurance costs but it was cheaper than alot of the other 4x4's I looked at. Brilliant car, and capable off road, dispite what alot of people think. dan-250
I'm looking at getting a 3.1 trooper shortly, quote of the insurance £687 which isn't bad and I'm 21 with 2 years no claims and a revoked licence from when I was 18. My mum is also a named driver. Relaible trucks, dads worked on them for along time, and knows them inside out.

dan-250
hi dan you will have few probs with a 3.1 trooper my mate is on his third trooper all been good buses the 3.0 ones not as good engine isues Yer on the 3.0 it has issues with the injectors and diesel leaking past them into the sump. I think after the recall work they was ok tho. Still rather have the old one tho, as it will run on vegi oil, with a heat exchanger and separate tank. My old man has one at work still going with 300k miles on the clock, (that's the 3.1) and not had to do major work to it.

Catweazle
Be aware that some small 4x4, I'm thinking especially about the Suzuki SJ, are absolutely awful to drive on-road.
gixer1
Suzuki Jimny, Diahatsu Terios, Suzuki Vitara or if you can find one - a Subaru Justy may be just the ticket!
dan-250
I think the cheapest to insure and run would probably be a fiat panda 4x4 but I don't think that's what you have in mind haha

TJ91
Frontera. When I was thinkng of getting a 4x4 I found frontera to be best on insurance(I am 21). I looked at fuel costs for my weekly commute, and the 2annual trips to Scotland and wrote the idea off.
jamiedenny
Jeep, Jeep, Jeep. Grand Cherokee Ltd. Get the deisel if your young (not the v8 6l). I have had the fortune to own some very luxury cars in my driving career and the jeep has been the best allrounder I have had. Bulllet proof, good off road and easy on road. It doesn't drive like an x5 but thats not a real 4x4 anyway. I'm looking at getting another one. Has any one ever seen a phaeton lamping in a field?. I have and it never ends well, trust me. Bionic Man
Got to agree with an old landy....easy to clean inside & outside with a hosepipe, when it needs repairs you can manage the majority yourself, and there's room to work in the engine comparment, unless you squeeze some huge V8 monster in there! Both my brother and I had one when we were young, sold them for what we paid for them, loads of fun. ^_^
