FalconFN
I wanted a new knife for paunching rabbits in the field so yesterday I picked up a new Opinel knife. They have great blades but I have never liked the orange varnish on them and I wanted a slightly more pleasing shape so I escaped to my shed for 40 minutes for a tinker; here is the result: Just needs a sharpen and I'm done. BSA-airgunner
i recon for the money the opinel is hard to beat mine has done me for 10 years plus so far and i bet when im gone my boy will get use out of it....the blade will polish to a mirror Finnish (WATCH YOUR FINGERS THOUGH i think this helps to keep it clean..for the edge i sharpen on fine 1200 grit wet and dry with oil this will give an edge good enough for shaving Edited June 10, 2012 by BSA-airgunner
Thunderbird
I prefer the carbon Opinels, easier to keep en edge on (for me). I've always had a problem sharpening stainless steel, and I think carbon is easier in the field. I got a no.10 the other day, lovely blade. Daveo26
I hate em, Steel seems really soft, Easy to sharpen but easy to blunt. Both look much nicer than factory finish though well done I agree for the money they are good value Edited June 10, 2012 by Daveo26
yankeedoodlepigeon
I washed my new opinel after using it for the first time left it on the draining board for 12hrs. just about salvaged the blade from the unbelievable rust that formed on it over night. Thunderbird
I paid £12 for a number 10 so I'm not going to be heartbroken if and when it dies. The edge I've got on it is brilliant (with very little effort), would do fine as a kitchen knife!

chrispti
Im too heavy handed for these knives I remember nicking my old mans one when I was a nipper, cut my fingers to bits, they are bloody sharp!!!!
Shropshire_Lad
I do have a new one on stand by, bought with salop off here a while back. The good news, in another five years or so it will be the perfect size for Rabbiting.
Thunderbird
Ive got an Opinel 5, 8 and 10. The folding saw they do is IMO expensive and compared with the BAHCO one you can get for about £11 is too expensive.

Thunderbird
I think they received some sort of design award a while back for being a 'beautiful object.'
ack-ack
He only sharpened it once    Quality. I find my ones are more resistant to rust after they've had a firing whilst wedged in the grill of the BBQ. It shrinks the wood a bit at the hinge end also which makes them easy to open and close. I've had more Opinels than I care to mention. Never had the same one for more than 2 years as I loose them or they get pinched just as they are loosening up and the blades starting to take a new shape. Daveo26
Love the Opinels, best thing the French have ever made. Not true IMHO the best thing the french have made are laguiole knives, I have had one for the past ten years its a work of art, Its assisted me with preparing 1000's of animals for the table with scalpel like precision laguiole is a style of knife and different makers creat their own to a similar pattern. Mine is by G.David made in 12C27 stainless its perfect. Infact im going to go the france next year to buy another its that good.

tomhw100
Excellent knife for the price and they are unbelievably sharp! I have had rust problems on one but the rest have been excellent.
smig4373
I have an Opinel Efile...Slightly different shaped handle and a polished blade...Always sharpens well and holds its edge.. I have a number 8 for general use..unbeatable for the money..
monkey_trumpet
I've got one i use down on the allotment. I like the carbon steel blade (as long as you look after it) but wasn't keen on the wood work. It is now a much more rounded shape and dyed the wood with some of last years beetroot (blood of it's first victim!) They are a great little "cheap and cheerful" knife. henry d
used it once wiped it , went to use it few weeks later , covered in rust That is the prob, you need to make sure the handle is dry too.
Dunkield
Not a fan myself but I know they have a loyal following on here so when I say this display in France I thought it may appreciated by them. I guess this is pretty much the entire range?
