David BASC
Dear All, A petition which opposes plans to dramatically increase firearms licensing fees in Northern Ireland will be launched by the Province’s shooting and gun trade organisations at the Irish game fair this weekend. As you know, a public consultation on proposals to increase fees and make other amendments to the Firearms (Northern Ireland) Order 2004 has been launched by the Department of Justice (NI). The consultation document proposes an increase in the cost of a firearm certificate from £50 to £120. The cost of a firearms dealer’s certificate would increase from £150 to £697. The British Association for Shooting and Conservation in Northern Ireland (BASC NI), the Countryside Alliance Ireland, the Gun Trade Guild of Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Firearms Dealers’ Association have begun a petition which opposes the fees increase and calls for a reduction in age limits to allow young people to be taught to shoot under supervision. The petition is being launched at the Irish game fair at Shanes Castle on 7th and 8th July. Tommy Mayne, BASC Northern Ireland director, said: “The message we are getting from our members is very clear. They oppose such a large increase in firearms licensing fees which could force shooters and farmers to give up their firearm certificates and could deter newcomers from taking up a sport which contributes significantly to the NI economy. We urge everyone involved in shooting to sign this petition and make our views known to the Justice Committee.” To find out more about the firearms consultation click here: http://www.dojni.gov.uk/index/public-consultations/current-consultations/consultation-on-proposal-to-vary-firearms-licensing-fees.htm For more information call Tommy Mayne on 028 9260 5050 / 07775 400 531 Best wishes David

Cottonseed
If I understand this correctly, the steps the NI government plan to take over RFDs varying certificates for same calibre, plus scrapping the bureaucracy over visiting mainland shooters, should, in fact, reduce the amount of work done by the firearms department. So why are they asking for more funding? From what I've read on different shooting forums it seems like the NI firearms department need a bloody good shake-up in the matter of efficiency before they start asking for an increase in fees. millrace
The price increase also effects us aswell as the dealers. indeed it does, but i dont make any money out of shooting,, my irk is with the dealers who with their captive market and reluctance to even put a price on their goods at a show always charge way more than the mainland and now gripe cause its going to be a few more quid for their licences,,,they all have done well out of the sport and i can assure you none of them will close just for the increase to their rfd,,,,the same as very few shooters will stop when our fees go up,,,,we may not like it but when have our mla's ever listened to us anyhow were the public its our duty to pay more for what we want to do..... The problem as I see it is, shooters here are going to get hit twice, firstly with their own licence fee increase and secondly our rfd's are obviously going to put their prices up even more to cover their increase Yet again we're getting shafted Rich
dazza
I'll happily pay £120 for a five year FAC. As for the dealers over here their all over priced con men. I buy my guns and gear over the water. Edited July 15, 2012 by dazza
tweedledee
i would n`t mind the 120£ fee if the service would match,i do however feel it will mean the farmer or old person will feel it too much and turn their guns in. don`t really feel this would be fair for anyone who seldom uses a gun.like dazza any gun i buy from now on i`ll bring in from across the water, only thing i buy from dealers here is my ammo,i even buy my pellets online now.i know for sure i`ll not be giving my money to the range rover brigade at the game fair
