bi9johnny
i popped into north wales shooting school saturday gone, asked the same question to the gunsmith and he said £80 and wont be able to do it for 7 weeks as he's waiting on his new lathe to be installed but did make out to me he doesn't like doing them there's confidence for you if you find somewhere let me know please mate regards john
luckytrigger
I paid £50 to get the barrel shortened on my brno that was at MGR guns at Woodhall although they dont actually do the shortening the rifle is sent off to a gunsmith. Turnaround was 4 weeks as they bloke was very busy at the time. Well worth doing as its made the brno much easier to use from the window of my truck. rallyrus
I phoned NWSS and the gunsmith said he didn't have a lathe so couldn't do it but could on a couple of months, so that ties in with what you said John. Valley arms have said it would be about a week or so turnaround. Have just spoke to Brock & Norris as they arn't to far, and my .223 has been done by them for the previous owner and it's a very good job, they want £95! They said it will take 30mins so sit and wait while they do it

rallyrus
Yeah it's not cheap, it would have to be booked it so they could fit it in as he said there rather busy at the minute. I have had another price of £115 of someone so not the most expensive!! And I must admit out of my 3 rifles the thread and crown they have done is easily the best! njc110381
Go to Mike fella, he's one of the best gunsmiths in the country IMO. He's a really nice bloke too and he'll talk you through everything that he's doing - well worth the extra few quid to get a first class job and to learn how it's done. You could easily go and pay £50 somewhere and end up with a thoroughly **** job - I've seen it happen many times. Before I found a chap local to me I drove to Mike to get my guns done. It took the best part of half a day to get from home to him and back but it was worth every second of it. He's done a couple of videos on youtube. Have a watch (this is one of three, the forum won't let me link all of them)... Edit... Thats like £200 an hour i am not suprised they are not too busy to have a "while you wait" service. 30 mins sound quick unless they have tooled up for the job. there is more to it than just parting the end off and cutting a quick extenally trued thread He's really good - one of the best in fact. bedwards1966
I'd say that price is OK. I've heard of it being as low as £30-40 (though it's possible that someone charging such a low rate might not be taking the care required for a good job). I got a quote for a threading and proofing for £120, I then went elsewhere where it was £75 without proof. I'd say what your being asked for a chop and thread is fine. Scully
In Cumbria mate and me were quoted 65 quid each to have this done.Found out who the dealer used, went direct to him and he charged us 35 quid each including re-crown.Top notch job. If I had a decent useable lathe in work I'd do it myself! It's yours if you want it?! You know the price and unfortunately the price I paid for it!!
