fitz
Hi guys, I'm reasonably new to the clay shooting scene, and in the not to distant future will need to purchase cartridges, however I'm at a bit of a loss to which ones to buy / use. I realise being a beginner the chances of me telling the difference between the best and the cheapest is going to be negligable, however I dont want to waste money on cartridges that are absolute rubbish, or ones that I wont reap the benefit of against the cost. I apologise in advance as I'm sure this has been done to death here before, but for want of trolling through loads of threads I thought I'd ask anyway. If you'd suggest a particular brand and variant, could you give me an idea as to cost per 1000 as well? Doesnt have to be exact, would just like a rough idea. Thanks in advance Fitz

Fitz No disrespect but as a beginner to the sport ANY cartridge will perform better than you will to start with. I doubt you'll notice any difference between the cheapest and the dearest, apart possibly from the recoil. If you're using a semi auto it's probably best to stick to a 70mm cartridge, simply to avoid any potential jamming issues. If you're using an o/u then fill your boots. 21g 24g 28g cartridges will all do the job, it really is just a matter of price/preference. Just Cartridges price list will give you a good idea of prices over a large range of shells. http://www.justcartridges.com/index.html
Azzurri
Eley Firsts, less than £150 a thou, you wont go far wrong.
TrapFiller
Search your nearest gunshop's online pricelist(if theey are online) for an up to date price list. Some popular cartridges are Eley: olympics and firsts. Hull: CompX and superfast. Lyavale: english sporter and dan arms. Then you have other such as CCI Claybusters and Rio target load which i an told a pretty much the same cartridge. They all vary in price and recoil but will do the same for a new shooter. Also fibre cartridges will be around 8-12 pounds more. Edited July 23, 2012 by TrapFiller
fitz
No offence taken. This was pretty much the entire point of the thread. Formerly decent golfer so I'm used to paying £3.50 per golf ball for the right sort for a single figure handicapper, however that same golf ball would be useless to a beginner and only cost them money when they could use a 50p reclaimed ball as it wont impede them one iota. chady
Check whare you are going to shoot... ask if they let you use plastic. If not you will have to use fibre which are slightly more in price
apache
Where in the country are you? I'd say go for 21G cartridges because they are cheaper and less recoil. I promise at some point you will miss-mount and hurt yourself whilst learning, and that is much less with 21G! Don't pay more than £150/1000

Thanks for the comments A good golfer can reuse the same ball, a shooter can't no matter how good. Eley first, hull compX and of the budget 21-28g shot size 7.5-8 will be fine. just get the right sort of wad for the ground Plastic or fibre. buying by the 1000 sounds alot but worth it they only go up in price! Some shops will sell a slab 250 at the 1000 rate others wont.
blackbird
Best value for money shells in my opinion are Eley Olimpic trap I bought a 1000 slab last week for £162 plastic wad.

dunnoh
I've started recently n all and I have tried quite a few I don't like Eley Firsts 28g - far too kicky for me and the 21g ones just didn't seem to work at all, felt like a delay with each shot. Hull Prosport, Inter Comp and Comp X were much of a muchness. I seemed to hit things further away with the Prosport. The Intercomp 24 g and the Comp X 28g were ace. Really crisp but I couldn't warrant spending more on the Intercomp. However I tried the Cheddites from a chap on here. Honestly they are really good. Just enough kick that you know you have pulled the trigger and I feel that hit things that I really should have missed! And the bonus was that they are cheaper than anything else I've shot! lxtav
Hull comp x the best i have used so far and less than £160 a thou.
grousemoor
I'm sure comp x are a bit slow, I prefer Eley Olympics or Fiocci top 1, both good value buys Grousemoor
Thunderbird
I'm sure comp x are a bit slow, I prefer Eley Olympics or Fiocci top 1, both good value buys Grousemoor Comp X are fast if the Hull website is to be believed, and a good beginners cartridge until you can confidently get the mount right. They saved me many a bruised arm when I was learning and doing 100-200 clays as practice using my very light Franchi Falconet.
Chard
Unless you're an arserippingly good shot, it's unlikely that differences in cartridge speed will trouble you. It's all in the head
EdSolomons
If you can tell the difference between the faster and slower ones when Im loading the gun for you (so you dont know whats going in) Ill pay for your shooting for the day, if you cant, you pay for mine. Deal? As my esteemed colleague said, its all in your head.

Thanks in advance Fitz Hi pal, guess your shooting clays at your local club just see what your fellow shooters are using and where they get them from, it's usually a local gunsmiths that has ample stock in all the time, to be honest with you mate I'm new to the sport as well, as long as it goes BANG and hits the target ( hopefully) that will do for me, by the way I use Cheddite 28grm 7.5 pastic wads from malmo guns in Lancaster
