kent
.243 win will do the job just fine with the correct bullet if you can shoot. If not then get the biggest cannon they will let you have. The correct bullet is something like the Nosler partition BTW not any old 100grn pill
Gerry31
I thought about a 30.06 but I go to France and you can't take a gun which is a military calibre
Gerry31
Im shooting 105 grain speed bt home loads from my 243 Doooo speer not speed blumming auto spell
bedwards1966
If you can't take military calibers, your readily available choices appear to be .270 or .308. Any particular reason for not wanting a .308? If your think a .270 is a bit hefty, what exactly are you after? Something that's quite uncommon? Gerry31
308 just dosnt do it for me no idea why just never ever fancied one. I think its going to be a 270 I was just trying to see if anyone had anything which would grab me going back to 308 I dont think you can take that to france its used in USA as a military gun
HDAV
.375 H&H ?.300 H&H ? .275 rigby?
Steel100
How about 6.5 x 57 - good choice of bullets and unlike 6.5 x 55 it's a non-military calibre. Incidentally, the French are in the process of changing the law on military calibre's. Andy
iain
7mm-08. Very flat. And hits as hard as a 308.
Alycidon
I thought about a 30.06 but I go to France and you can't take a gun which is a military calibre 270 it is then, thousands of stalkers up there use them. I shot a Roe buck with one a while ago, necked, no real damage at all. 7mm- 08 is another option but sourcing ammo may be hard unless you reload, 6.5x55 is another to be considered. CharlieT
I had a go with a 7-08 a short while ago and must say was very taken with it. On red's I couldn't see or tell the difference between it and a .

MiLisCer
France will come in to line very soon - 6.5x55 - 129 Hornady Interlocks - just spot on for the big Reds: Mike
Gerry31
Hi mike I've thought about a Swedish my mate has one the lad who came with me to pick monty up im stuck between a 270/30:06/or a Swedish I just can't decide. My old 243 has killed enough reds but there are times when I back out of the shot through lack of confidence in the calibre
HDAV
I still think the .275 rigby is worth a look aka 7x57mm
