I mis typed, i meant any immigrants should be deported. we shouldn't let people into this country who are unable to offer anything productive

You try getting into the US, Canada, Australia or NZ. You have to be able to walk on water. Here, we let every scumbag in, don't even have to queue up. Mostly because Blair and Brown thought that once the got in, got their free house and benefits they would be lifetime labour voters. Which they probably will be.

They have no State benefit system in Spain or Portugal. What there is has been run by the church since the middle ages. The needy get the help they require but there is no getting one past the local Catholic Priest if you are swinging the lead.

Or America, you get six months help to sort yourself out and then you are on your own and no exceptions.

Simple solutions work

Doesn't work in the US. Children still starve to death. People die for want of basic medication.

Those born in to poverty usually die in poverty. I wouldn't call that a 'simple solution working'.

I'd argue that advice has inherent value if it facilitates sales etc.

I do agree, things like microchips are what we should be producing here alongside service industries.

We have the ability to develop the correct skill base to make the most complex machines in the world if we appropriately manage human resources.

I just don't feel heavy industry as it was fifty years ago has a future here given the progress of the developing world.

But putting all your eggs in one basket is bad business at any level. Banking is in a crisis, so as it's the only money generating industry we've got left, so is the country. Having more eggs in more baskets spreads the risk if one clutch fails.

I can't think of any other industry where the volumes involved in banking can be generated quite as readily. Unfortunately that means its great when it's good but awful when it goes belly up due to imperfect risk modelling.

I think much of the damage to the country stems from irresponsible government borrowing in years of unprecedented economic success. I bet no one here borrows more when they are having successful years in their business. This combined with rock bottom confidence is one of the reasons why we haven't moved forward from four years ago.

Fingers crossed the recession might at least leave us with a leaner, fitter economy as less successful business models fail. Whether that will be the case is yet to be seen. I'm fairly optimistic about the next five years, there are positives and I think we are moving towards a more diverse portfolio than we had 10 years ago. Which as you mentioned will be needed. People I know with recent PhDs in the sciences are developing manufacturing processes that sound like science fiction. This can only be a good thing. There are also some good signs from other industries, after a few slightly poor years legal services look to be picking up, I was told at the weekend that the non-livestock food industries are looking like they are growing well. I still don't think labour prices will ever be low enough for real heavy industry that some want to see back in this country.

I see a global averaging happening, where the wealth of the privileged West is averaged across the whole world. Good news for the third world, bad news for us. In fact, it could even overshoot averaging, as our spoilt and un-motivated youth find they can't compete with kids who happily walk 5 miles to school and hang on the teachers every word, in the hope of a better life.

don't worry 955 just doesn't like anybody :good:

One interesting thing with migration is were we to exit the EU then an awful lot of people would loose the right to live and work here, I assume all eu citizens who do at the moment would loose the right to stay and work here. But the same would apply to brits moved to spain and france etc could be one hell of a can of worms to sort that out.

During his time as Chancellor, Brown was recognised across the world as being good at his job - as PM he was dire and he is a good example of being careful what you wish for. I have taken jobs that I quickly realised that I had little aptitude or real interest in - luckily for everyone, this did not include being in government!

How in the name of God can Brown be described as a good Chancellor? His tenure was an unparalelled catastrophe for this country. He was never an economist, he was a failed political journalists and now a failed politician who out of personal spite blocked the precious few New Labour policies that were worthwhile such as welfare reform and city academies. This is the man who inflated the money supply to create a property price boom and a distaterous credit bubble. He increased state spending as a percentage of GDP to over 50%. Every student of economics, even failed ones, know that state spending as a percentage of GDP is unsustainable above 25%. Parts of Scotland and North East England are effectively feudal holdings of the state as a result of this man's work. He changed taxation law to facilitate a flagrant act of theft against private pensions that would shame a banana republic and will condemn millions of people to a miserable old age. He sold our gold reserves at an historic low in the market. He so extended the reach of the state and gerrymandered the tax and benefit system as to enslave a huge previously self-reliant section of society and drag them into the stagnation of state dependancy. He increased the burden of taxation to its highest ever level in peacetime. He meddled with financial regulation to hobble the Bank of England and set the conditions for a banking crisis, and when one duly came about he ensured that it spread by underwriting corruption and incompetance with our money to buy himself political capital. He insulted our Monarch. He **** on our armed forces in the most cynical, calculated and treacherous fashion, deliberately starving them of resources after they had been deployed in conflict. He squandered the healthiest economic legacy since the second world war and spent every single penny, then borrowed, borrowed and borrowed again untill we were left over a trillion pounds in debt, with nothing to show for any of it. He only avoided a Sovereign debt crisis by being thrown out of office.

If I had my way Brown and all his henchman and apologists would be publicly hanged in Parliament Square.

Well said gimlet.

A cynic would theorise that labour only got/stayed in power by appealing to work shy dossers who knew that voting anything but labour would reduce their benefits.

People should not be allowed to vote unless qualified to do so,I.e intelligent enough to know that voting for who gives you the most free money is not ultimately a smart move for the UK.

I agree, just look at what is happening in the EU with their unsustainable socialised system. In Spain, before the crisis, every second euro was spent on some kind of welfare.
