-Mongrel-
It looks like I will need another van in the fairly near future. Can't buy new, and am looking for suggestions for a frugal car based van. I'm looking already at a Transit connect but don't know what their MPG is, and the Vauxhall combo that seems to do about 55 mpg average, both diesels of course. What do/did you have, and what was the economy like? Any other major pluses or minuses? Edited November 8, 2012 by -Mongrel-

-Mongrel-
I've had both and currently have an astra cdti, would Recomend the vauxhall hands down! What does the Astra give you fuel wise? I do like them and am desperate to avoid a larger van....the bigger it is, the more **** you fill it up with! I've got a little fiesta van, does 65 mpg I'm going to have a look, but feel the fiesta may be too small. I am led to believe that the Vauxhall Combo is based around the Corsa, hence the respectable fuel figures, but it's 3 times the load area of the Fista. neil w
ford connect are good on fuel there are two different BHP engines the lower one is better on fuel .dont have any figures though .dont buy a vauxhall combo 13 cdti they are very good on fuel but there six speed gearbox is junk and a costly repair bill will follow . walshie
I've got a Vauxhall Combo. 55mpg is a bit optimistic I think. Trip computer says 46mpg average.

ESS
Tranny Connect TD T200 75bhp.. nippy & nice comfy ride, plenty room in the back minus the bulkhead fitted, reliable and roughly 30/35 per gallon, Vauxhall Combo 1.7 DI had 2 in the past, reliable, seated low down, 50/60 per gallon, again plenty room especially in cab area , both had minor probs with S L Door / coil springs otherwise excellent. karpman
I have a astravan 1.7 cdti and get 50+ mpg I doubt you will get 40 out of the transit connect the astravan is without doubt the best driving van there is . The 1.7cdti is great until you POP one of them tiny hoses on the motorway, you lose all your water and first thing you know about it is a red light on the dash telling you your over heating lol. Damage is done, if that don't happen you will get fed up with alternators. The 1.3 cdti had a recall on starter motors and the glow plugs don't like coming out not to mention bearings in the gearbox dam fiat build. Give me a dti any day, not without there faults but a dam site cheaper to repair. If I.was going new would have to be summat by vw. HDAV
Ok recent experiences Astra estate 1.9 cdti boot full of gear full beans 150 Bhp 4-450 miles to a tank, corsa 1.3 cdti "ecoflex" a tool box in it best i have done 500 from a tank, combo 1.3 cdti ladders on top and gear in the back 370 ish........ Impressed my self got 499.3 miles out of corsa this week and got £60 of fuel in it.........
houlsby
I run a 2005 combo 1.3cdti for 600 miles min per week. I get 450 miles to £60 at £1.40 a litre. They get loads more in the back than the berlingo, mine has racking on all walls, about to put a small gas cooker on back doors for the brew. It's not fast, but it sits at 75-80 allday long fine... If you want speed get the 1.7 and put a tuning chip on. 380-390 to the tank and around 100 ish bhp.
