pigeon controller
Friday saw us starting out at 08.00 with a hard frost and a touch of fog we new this would make the birds sit in the trees till the frost and fog is burnt off by the sun. We started out looking at some of our rape while we were scanning the field the Farmer stopped and said that he had set a rocket off over the field at 07.30 and lifted about a hundred birds. There were about fifty on the field and he proceeded to set off another rocket ( Big Boys Toys) . We said do you want us to shoot them and he said no as there was a duck shoot later on, but could we have a go mid week between the shoots. We carried on and looked at all the areas which should hold pigeon, not a bird. So we had a brew and a sandwich in a layby we then noticed that with the sun comming out brighter the birds were on the move and we picked up on a flightline and followed it to a rough set aside field with about fifty birds in the trees with more joining. We sorted out the Farmer and he told us it was a failed linseed crop and he was waiting to plough it in. So we set up on the edge of the field wind at our back and waited for them to return which they did but it all stopped at 14.30 so we packed up to have a look round for Saturday we picked up ninety two pigeon. Saturday saw us heading out at 08.00 to a field we had seen the day before which had a good number of birds in the trees at 15.00 on the Friday when we got to the field it had about 150 on the deck feeding hard, we spooked them and carried on to another farm so I could open up my drop boxes as I had been asked for some clean rabbits. When we returned there were about 200 in the trees, so we set up with the wind side on to the hide to avoid shooting into the sun which was very bright and low. We had a brew and nothing had come back so I put a shot up and they started to decoy. The wind then changed direction straight into our faces , we did not want to move as we were going into the sun so we moved the decoys further out from the hide so they could drop in from behind us, which they did from both sides. It all seemed to stop at 13.00 with very few birds flying, it was so slow DB went walking with the dog and came back with four rabbits. We stayed till 16.30 and ended the day with forty nine pigeons and four rabbits and very red faces from the wind .

JDog
It was brave of you to set up on the failed crop. Were they feeding on the linseed or on the other weed seeds?
pigeon controller
It was brave of you to set up on the failed crop. Were they feeding on the linseed or on the other weed seeds? They were on the linseed as we checked a couple of shot birds, the seed Is very small. I tasted some and they seamed bitter to me but the birds like them. Edited December 2, 2012 by pigeon controller
