Wildfowler12
I shot my first banded duck today, I'm going to give basc a ring in the morning to see if they can give me any info about it (their stamp is on the band). Has anyone been down this route before? I recall basc doing a ring and release scheme in the past, but can't find any info on the web. The band was stamped Wrexham, so I presume that's where the bird has come from? Not too far from our foreshore, less than 50miles.

It could be from the dee, they released some last year and this year, all which have been ringed.
silver pigeon 3
Shot a Drake gadwall this year that was ringed, it was a BTO ring. I contacted them via there online form and about 2 weeks later they sent me all the info they had on the bird via email. Good luck with finding out the info on yours

JDog
I shot a woodcock three years ago with a ring on it and I entered the information on the ring into the website shown. It turns out that it was from Eastern Russia. Thankfully that was before they started to place transmitters on some of the woodcock ringed over here. I would have felt bad shooting one which had been tracked for 4000 miles.

motty
I shot a triple at mallard last year, all of which were ringed. I gave the information from the rings to the basc. The info i got back was poor to say the least. One of the birds was an adolescent drake, but the information i got back was that all the birds were over 1 year old. The location given where they were released sounded like a rough guess.

Big Al
I have only shot two ringed ducks in almost 30 years shooting and 20 years fowling - a mallard and a teal. Both were shot in the same season about 10 years ago. I still check every bird I shoot to see if I can get another not as a trophy thing. I am really interested in finding out about the movements of the birds. The teal was ringed by the British Museum and they sent me a print out of all the details. The mallard had a basc ring and they didnt even reply to my letter.

I've had a look on google earth and I think I have a rough idea of where it was released.

Dee Wildfowler
Hi Xav, If it's a BASC ring its probably one the club has released, please notify the Conservation Dept at BASC. Back in the 70s I shot a pair on morning flight of the First on the Bombing Target Flash that I had reared, ringed and released only 3 weeks before. I had a Mallard once that had been ringed in Poland 10 years before, I've had Teal from the Netherlands, Pintail from central Russia and the most amazing was a Pintail Drake that I shot on a Saturday night that had been ringed the Sunday before about 20 miles South of St. Petersburg. If you think of the distance from St Petersburg to the Dee, almost certainly by coming mainly around the coast. then that's a tremendous mileage in only 6 days. scolopax
strangest one I have had was when hanging the game in the larder on a shoot I beat on in east Yorks seeing two wigeon on the rails from an evening flight the night before. Both wigeon were rung, the only two shot, an old hen and a young hen so I guessed they had both been caught and rung together as a 'family'.. When I got the records back one had been rung on a northern Scottish firth, literally two hundred metres away from the cottage we stay in when on our annual fowling away trip, the other had been rung more locally on the Derwent Ings. Both rung the previous winter and distances were something like 20 miles and 480 miles. Only shot two rung birds myself, a mallard and a teal. A chap I was shooting with once bagged a snipe with a ring on, I took it to submit the info but somehow managed to lose it, it was of course quite tiny. All were BTO rings.
