cockercas
Abit off topic but here it go's. When it rains and rains and rains like it has done and the fields are underwater. What happens to moles? Because the don't drown because there still in the fields.

cockercas
I don't know if moles swim. But they wouldn't last long in a tunnel of water.
39TDS
Moles are very good swimmers, haven't you seen their paddles?
bobt
our cat takes great delight in waiting for moles, main reason I tolerate it.
cockercas
I've never looked at a mole. So what happens to them when every things flooded?
njc110381
If you want quick results don't make too much noise when you spread the hill out, they hate being disturbed. I prefer to just push them over with my foot rather than stamp on them. When the soil moves aim about 4" low and fire with a decent heavy load. You'll get them. I've done it with everything from 30g #6 from a 12g to my .338 Win Mag. Anything that's got the weight to penetrate the soil will do the job. And keep still. They're very sensitive to movement above ground and won't come up if they hear you.

stubby
Comon. Someone must know what happens to moles when there tunnels flood. surely they will move to higher ground, dryer tunnels, like any other land dwelling animal, yes they are very good swimmers, so maybe the just take a day off,lol
cockercas
But I have fields that was completely underwater. Now the moles are back. No higher ground.
bakerboy
The question is! do field's flood from water coming up through the soil or water not passing down through soil quickly enough? so does the mole dig deeper to get away from the water. cockercas
The fields was flooded for weeks. Some of it still is. So the ground must of absorbed all the water it can. And if the mole tunnels deeper won't the tunnel just fill up behind it as it dug?
codling99
i would think they get above ground and run for it before field actually flooded, then head back when it dries, they cant possibly live under water, and can swim but not for a week. so they either move or die basically, ive trapped many moles in flooded tunnels, they just move away quicker than the water
cockercas
Thanks. They must be good at running aswell because its a big field surrounded by other big fields all under water.
alastair0903
i always thought that moles would stay in runs in the hedgerows when it got too wet ? Mole runs normally start from the hedgerows out into fields as the run going from the hedgerow is normally a good place to put a trap ? I am no mole expert mind
codling99
they are very quick moving, and can travel a mile or two over night searching for mates, thats when their veunrable to foxes. google moles, and theres a few informative videos and websites about mole behaviour. Gimlet
Moles can tunnel to great depth. It is said grave diggers have see them scuttle across the bottom of open graves. I have some SSGs, will they do or would it be less messy to keep the moles?
matone
They do travel a good distance every day when looking for food .They have runs in the walls or hedge cams around the fields which are higher. Some must drown in the sort of flooding we`ve had though ! 39TDS
This is from yesterday, clearly shows what both barrels of my SxS loaded with 28g #7.5 does to a mole hill. Moley was inside pushing up the soil at the time, only thing he is pushing up now is daisies. Took me quite a while to catch him at it and he made a right mess in the meantime!
