sheffield shooter
Hi guys, I'm thinking of renting a large field and getting it drilled with wheat and setting up some permanent hides in the right areas and renting out pigeon shooting days on the field not really for profit but to cover all costs involved with doing this so probably around £20 per gun for a full day, just thought it would be a good way to help out people who can't get any pigeon shooting, so what do u guys thing, and any advice would be good, it Would be in the derbyshire area Thanks all

JDog
If you are not in an area known for good numbers of pigeons your altruistic plans will be pointless. If there are birds in the area there may be two days shooting at drilling time, maybe a day or two if the wheat goes flat and then maybe some shooting over the stubble. If you rent the field long term and leave the wheat unharvested then that maybe a different story.
sheffield shooter
I would do whatever was to keep the pigeons coming, and there are 2 main flight paths over the field I have in mind plus rooting birds, the area is full of pigeons constant
cosmo
maybe one half wheat and one half clover will give you shooting over a longer part of the year
sheffield shooter
I was thinking of half wheat and maybe half rape if that would work
deny essex
Would it not be bordering on "baiting" which is illegal ?
sheffield shooter
Not really as a local farmer would be using the crop

Bleeh
Well, I've seen this sort of thing done before, I knew a farmer who loved pigeon shooting and would drill a few acres of clover and so he had some good shooting, and his arguement was that it was better he had them eating that, then the rest of his crops. Anyway, long story short pigeons don't stay in the same area for long when they are distubed, they would rather have something less yummy but more peaceful after a couple of days of being bothered. It might be fun but I wouldn't count on getting your money back.
lakeside1000
You might want to ensure you get sporting rights included as many farmers who let land reserve the rights for themselves, but in your favour more power to you , if you can get a steady flow of pigeons why not, I have a 7 acre field which has a good flight line over it, I often set up a few decoys and the hide and get up to 100 birds over in a session, not many come in to the decoys but if I get in a dozen shots in a session im happy, I might even hit a couple so I can have a nice pigeon pie for tea. anyway it gets me out of the house which pleases the wife

B725
What are you going to do if and when the wheat has been eaten by the pigeons etc,it will not take long to clear any seed that is on the ground.
