Hi all I have a question

I was thinking of getting an Airow gun adaptor for my bow and using it to hunt with in the uk but is this legal? It's not legal to bow hunt with a bow and arrow but this is not with an arrow I think it's a fine line but would like to see how others would view this.

If its a "firearm" I.e. a gun then will need FAC, if it is a bow you can't hunt with it either way your in trouble if found hunting with it! Read the 1968 firearm act with amendments and the 2010 VCR act.

BTW hunt what exactly?

have seen a crossbow that fires a 8mm ball baring at Velocity 32 Grain 8mm Balls 410 ft/sec and a lead shaped Power 32 Grain 8mm Balls 12ft/lbs

or a lead projectile elocity 30 Cal Lead Projectiles: 308 ft/sec Power 30 Cal Lead Projectiles : 23.3ft/lb its not firing a arrow/bolt so would this be legal to shoot vermin like rabbits pigeons squirrels http://www.crossbows...ptor/4539462487

and its not got a barrel don't use explosives/ propellent powder

I would say this would be classified as an air gun. The bow is simply pushing on a piston to provide the air power. The question would be what power it is outputting, is it FAC? I would argue that you could hunt with this. instead of a spring or PCP cylinder you are powering the air rifle with a bow string - so its an air rifle not a bow. Would be an interesting discussion with the coppers though!

I am going to ring my feo to see what he thinks and also basc. I would use it for rabbits etc just small pests really. If the bow is set to 50lb it shouldn't go over the Limit any more than that and it would have to go on a fac I think. Looks fun so I'm going to get one even if its just for the garden at £160 its cheaper than a pcp and decent springer. You can get them to shoot paintballs to!

I would put that in the same bracket as a sling shot and you can use them, again it's a fine line as to what is legal and what's not.

675 fps with all but the lightest .22 pellets would make it FAC in UK circa 14 ft/lbs the issue is that the bow could easily exceed that sort of draw thus throw you into trouble...Nice idea but I would say impractical with UK legislation. The paintball one looks like fun..........

It doesn't need explosives to be called a gun

This looks too confusing from a legal point of view and I'm pretty sure you would end up in court, if only for them to test the law.

You could be right there mate. I may get one for the garden to have a play with if I get it ill wait to see what basc say.

I was thinking the same but not sure who can confirm it. As its not a rifle or a bow I didn't know what it would come under.

Apply the definition of 'firearm' in the Act, which is; 'A lethal barelled weapon capable of discharging shot, a bullet or other missile.'. From the look of it and the description of how it works it's a firearm according to that definition.

The problem then is what type of airgun is it because rifles and pistols have different upper power limits before they need to go on to FAC. If it's a rifle then it can be up to 12ft/lbs but only half that if a pistol. In the latter case if it exceeds the power limit it is a section 5 prohibited pistol so you can't have it at all. If it's 12ft/lbs and the barrel is under 300mm then it's sec.5 as well. The real problem is that I don't know how you would classify it as I don't think it can reasonably be described as either rifle or pistol.

I don't think it is. It isn't a 'rifle' which is a long gun with a stock and which is designed to be fired from the shoulder.
