Big Mat
We see the odd bit about the big bores in here but not much. So who's got what then? Do you get out to shoot them much? One day i'll have one, nowt like shooting a piece of history!
TJ91
Are we talking 8bore and larger?
Big Mat
Are we talking 8bore and larger? I think 10 bore about counts as big bore, but i was more thinking of 8 bore and larger!
TJ91
I think 10 bore about counts as big bore, but i was more thinking of 8 bore and larger! Yes I always classed old 10 s/s as a big bore. But obvs a lot more common. Like you, I would like to have a piece of fowling history 1 day, a nice single 4 would be my pick of the bunch
Amazed
I have a double 10. I wouldn't call it a big bore as such the carts will still fit in a standard 12 belt they are only slightly larger in diameter.
Magus69
I have 2X10 bores, a Lincoln o/u and an E.M. Reilly & Co rotary underlever hammer gun, 2X8 bores, one being a J. Braddell and Son of Belfast sbs rotary underlever hammergun, and the other is an E.G. Higham of liverpool single barrel rotary underlever hammergun, and finally a single barrelled Field's of London top lever hammergun in 4 bore. I shoot them all but do seem to favour the Lincoln and the double 8. Edited to add: I will be taking the double 8 on to Sheps soon Matt so I might be persuaded to let you have a go and get you a goose with a "proper gun" Edited January 20, 2013 by Magus69
B B
I have two 8 bore doubles at the moment a Armitalia Luchini 8 bore double hammer gun, and a Ralph grant 8 bore basically a bored out ten, the grant could be for sale if anyone fancies it . I don't use the 8s much at all these days tend to use the auto ten most of the time.
Gunneravi
I'd love a go on an 8 bore especially I beautiful old hammer gun. Something really traditional and nostalgic there
wildfowler.250
I have a basque 10 which is a solid gun. Wouldn't call it a big bore though
Pole Star
Sorry about the pic of that 8 bore Edward Whistler that vanished ! but I had a message from Zapp saying that any guns for sale must be in the guns for sale section , even though I did say mine might be for sale ! so if I do decide to sell in the future I will put it there . Happy now Zapp A number of you did ask me questions about 8bores & loads ect so I will repost those pics & one or 2 more & answer any thing you want to know ,if I have the answer that is . barrold
As you very well know young matthew i have a cheeky gumark kestrel 10 bore sbs. It hasn't had much use yet as i've only recently purchased it but, with abit of luck, over the coming seasons it will get some use. As a wildfowling novice i find the lure and magic of the big 8 and 4 bores quite intriguing and aspire to own a nice sbs under lever 8 hammer. If only to use it on the odd flight, i'd find it quite nostalgic, taking me back to the days when i used to accompany my Dad and uncle Derek on the foreshore up on rockliffe in cumbria. In my opion we need to keep the big bore tradition going for many others like myself

scolopax
Double hammer eight by Mountcastle of Torquay, circa 1885. Top lever. Fine Damascus barrels. Original colour hardening on action. 3¼" chambers, 3¼ ton proof. ITM. Not the best photo, a very young pink makes a decent sized grey look massive:
kent
I have a more modern double 10 but I should seriously like to own (at least keep charge of for my lifetime, not sure if you really ever own a 150yr + old gun or become its current custodian) a vintage double 8 in good working order, will I ever find or justify the cost of one is another matter. I find I need some slowing down and smoothing out and a heavy gun helps me and they do produce better patterns than super mag 12 bores no-question. Yoggy
I used to own a double 8 Tolley. Cracking gun, and used to use it alot in my 30`s on Sheps. Sold it unfornately but still have fond memories lugging it about the marsh. Edited January 22, 2013 by Yoggy

Pole Star
Thats just typical mate!!! . But at the time we were having alterations done to the house and cash was tight so it had to go. But you`re right.....I should have kept it. Tell me about it ! years ago 1981 I think it was I was looking in a gun shop in Denver Colorado at some old shot guns that had the tell tale silver ovals in their stocks which told me they were English . Most of them had seen better days & some looked like they been trodden on by a stampede of cattle in one of those old Hollywood cow boy films ! . Now one of them was different the from the trampled ! it was a 10b side lock hammer gun made by Claybrough Bros & marked marked London on the top rib & it was a side lock hammer gun with a dolls head top extension & it a had beautiful half pistol grip stock . So I presented my UK shot gun cert & the deal was done & I was chuffed !! ( the lads in the shop thought I was nuts when I told them I wanted it to use ! ). Well trip almost over & the next day I was on the Greyhound bus to JFK airport & that was a long slow journey at a miserable 55mph . As a 22 year old I was a not sure what the reception would be when I went through the Red channel at customs at Heath Row ! ( I was expecting a grumpy greeting ) so I walked though as quick as could before he changed his mind ! Oh ! for the good old days before before head cases wanted guns ! . Well I took it to a dealer & he looked it over & said well it should be up to proofing ! so I had it re black powder proofed & when it came back it was lovely & I never did get to fire it just kept it in my collection & said one day . Well Yoggy I fell on some hard times too ! & sold it to a dealer for a sum I should not have ! but that was then . Now about a year or so ago I was looking in the shooting times & I noticed an add a dealer in Hearts had & I was sure it was my old 10 ? so I phoned them up & asked dose that 10bore you have show a black powder reproof 1981 ? so he had a look for them & said YES it has ! so I had found it at last ! . But there was a problem Orkney is a long way from Hearts & worse still like all big old guns the price had gone bonkers & I did not have the dosh handy ! ! . Any one Know where it is . Pole Star ps it had 31 in barrels & it had the American 2 & 5eights chambers which means it classified as an obsolete caliber Edited January 23, 2013 by Pole Star
subsonicnat
My mate offered me a Double TOLLY 8 some years ago for £800.
