wol the hunter
i suppose we all watch hugh finnely whittingstall and ray mears,i think they are both very interesting but what do you reckon. FANTASTIC
Markio
Ray every time. That guy can do anything with an axe, brilliant fun to watch.
Baldrick
As fascinating as it is to watch fatboy Ray cook his own snot after a hard day of canoe-building/tree-hugging, he isn't half as much fun to watch as Hugh. HF-W is a better presenter, he's more entertaining, more eccentric and far less PC, and also (I think) a bit more grounded than Ray. However, Ray's specialist programmes such as "The Telemark Heroes" are second-to-none. I watch both Ray and Hugh religiously, but Hugh leads on entertainment value. njc110381
I have a huge interest in the outdoor side of Ray Mears programmes. I'm still trying to master making fire with sticks. I can make lots of smoke, but that's about it! I have a few of his books, and also some others by other people on the same subject. As for the every day life side of things, H-FW is much better for the recipes side of things. The things you learn from his programmes are much more likely to be of use to the average family, unless you happen to be unlucky enough to need to survive on grubs and sleep under a tree in the rain because of a plane crash or some other bit of bad luck! I have never met either of them, but some years ago my company used to do H-FWs mums garden, and he used to help. It was a long before I turned up though, whch is a shame because he is supposed to be a very down to earth chap.
Graham M
I used to watch Ray Mears all the time until one programme in which he was talking about Eskimos. He pointed out at one point that Eskimos could never understand anyone who hunted for the sport of it. And the way he said it made it come across as though only people like himself should be allowed to own a rifle for hunting. I know that he once showed how to cook deer meat on a hot stone fire, but all the time he was emphasising that the deer had been shot in a “Necessary†cull. He was at great pains to try and distance himself from any thoughts that he may have shot it himself. Unlike Hugh, who goes out of his way to show how HE kills his own animals for the pot. Much more of an honest sort of presentation, even if he does cheat a little at times. G.M.
Baldrick
I agree with Graham, although for all Hugh's honesty, his grasp of firearms safety (the pigeons on the roof with the .22LR saga) is a bit patchy.
Graham M
his grasp of firearms safety (the pigeons on the roof with the .22LR saga) is a bit patchy. I think every rifle shooter in the country was cringing during that programme. G.M.

Poacher
Hugh for me, i agree with Baldrick and graham on this one, although Ray's skills are brill he does appear to be a numpty because he doesn't want to offend anyone, whereas Hughs a bit more of a character

On the subject of that deer he cooked, is it just me or did anybody else think, how strange it was that the deer appeared to have been shot at the top of the hill/mountain. Surely any stalker worth his salt wouldn't take that shot not knowing what was the other side in terms of a backstop in case of a miss or something!!!! But getting to the matter in hand, H FW is funny and real to life, where RM is very informative and of an instructional basis. Both have their merits although H FW can get a bit silly at times. Thumbs up to both
flash
H FW all the way, i never get bored of the re runs, and ray sometimes bores me with some of the stuff hes says, and how PC he is. cheers flash
rarms
>for all Hugh's honesty HAHAHAHA He is quoted from an article he wrote for the telegraph, saying that game shooting was bad. This is quoted on AnimalAids website. Then in his TV series he goes beating! As has been said in another thread, people will do/say anything for TV time!! It has to be Ray for me I am afraid, as entertaining hugh is, Ray is much more a realist and a better presenter, not expecting his viewers to believe that he can really live on the money he makes from selling bottled tomato sauce once a month!! >the pigeons on the roof with the .22LR saga I agree, very stupid, but they could have been .22shorts, in which case not quite so stupid! Brillaint! I must admit i hadn't noticed the PC element to Ray's programmes, i was too busy watching him carve a cutlery set with a 1lb axe. Axe
Whilst I find Ray's programmes great to watch and very informative I doubt I would ever need any of the info. Hugh's programmes are much more 'where my heart lies' so he gets my vote.
