Pigeon shooting near Andover

Recommended Posts

I have posted this on another forum as well and have only joined so I could share some sport hopefully so this is also a bit of an intro, lol.

My permission has 150 acres of crop fields, the farmer has planted oats & barley for his pig farm and even though his fields are still bare there are flocks and flocks of pigeon & crow.

I am more of a rabbit shooter with both .22 rimfire and air rifle, my experience of pigeon shooting with decoy's is zero however they don't like my air rifle when they are sat in the trees, lol.

I have got permission to decoy on the fields at anytime I wish but that is where some lucky person comes in:-) this permission to me is a gold mine for what I enjoy and as such the person who comes with me will obviously have to agree to certain conditions.

1. Be fully insured and have proof

2. Have all their own decoys, shotguns, transport to get here etc.

3. Be willing to share their experience and hopefully a shotgun too:-)

4. Must have a sense of humour.

Now what do I want for this opportunity? Nothing except the chance to learn from an experienced pigeon shooter, get some shots at some pigeon and to rid my farmers land of a few birds as a way of thanks. I am more than willing to pay for any cartridges I use and hopefully this will not be a one off but a long term thing.

Just so you guys know I am a serving soldier, been in nearly 22 years so know my way around firearms a wee bit, lol. I will only be able to do weekends or evenings and will need to deconflict diaries.

I am on the Hampshire/wiltshire border (SP9) and I am sure there will be a few replies to this but I can't take everyone unfortunately but please pm me and ill reply to everyone. Please let me know as much as possible to help my decision guys.

Many thanks

Danny

I only joined to share the offer mate as I've never shot pigeon other than with rifles on the ground or air rifles in trees. The amount that are on his land is just stupid and even though I could pick a few off if I set up a hide and deeks with my rifle I know the best way is how you guys do it. I also know how hard it is to get land and I would like an opportunity like this, but like I said, I would prefer just one person to keep coming back with me and not loads of different people so there will be disappointed people I would think but every person who does get in touch I will pm them my number so we can chat on the phone even if its just to say thanks but the offer is gone.

I understand your scepticism though.

Okay I'll leave out the "if you're genuine" part.

It's a kind offer, you should stick around for a bit fella, it's a good place this!!

Knowing my luck I will go and enjoy it so much I do end up sticking around, lol. I love my shooting and have been hunting for close on 26 years now but always with air and FAC rifle. If I like it that much ill have to apply for a SGC too, lol.

Well Danny,Brad,

What was the result ? no more pigeons left in the Andover area !!! all been shot or just shot at :)

At least the weather held out, I mean no rain but still cold and windy enough to keep the birds keen.

Well the update is............

The birds lived to see another day. We went, set up, had birds flying over fairly regularly but they didn't wanna pop down for a social so we had some speculative shots and we both missed, lol.

As Brad said there are days when they just don't come down for some reason, we may have had an idea why as when we were driving home abut 1/2 mile from my permission there was about 300-400 birds scoffing new drillings:-( maybe they were full?

It was certainly windy and cold but very enjoyable:-)

My SGC paperwork is all filled out and will be in the post in the morning so it looks like I need to get my hairy butt to a clay ground to get some hints and tips, lol.

Looks like I might just be here to stay:-)

I am sure Brad will have his own take on the day and I'm sure he will let you know what he thought, lol.

Very true Danny some days you win some you lose, couldnt put my finger on why they wouldn't decoy but seeing that field on the way home I'm sure had a lot to do with it.

As for the shooting well a night on the Smirnoff was probably not the best idea

Still just means more for another day keep your eye's peeled if they come back in numbers we wil give it another go.

Went over to my permission today fair few birds but nothing settling and they were flying very high
