JDog
I knew the rain would come just after lunchtime today so I asked a good shooting friend (the one who shot 119 on peas a month ago when I couldn't go) to meet me early so that we could get three hours or so in before we were rained off. We headed straight for a bean field but when we got there we found that we couldn't get either vehicle anywhere near where we wanted to be as the clay ground was soaked and slippery. Luckily the 'keeper was passing and he took our kit to the chosen spot and we walked behind him for three fields with our dogs. I must say that there were a lot of pigeons about in the blustery wind but it was clear that they were not happy about decoying. We shot a few and added them to the pattern but a great many passed us 60- 90m on either side heading to the other bean fields behind us. Of the ones that we did shoot some came into the pattern but many flared away at 40m or so making for very testing shooting. I believe that I shot as well on pigeons as I have ever done at these distant birds. The rain came in at 1pm exactly as predicted and as it was heavy and as we had to make three journeys back to the car we packed up having shot and picked 96 pigeons. When we got back to the cars after our journeys we saw huge numbers of pigeons coming into the fields from different flight lines than we had seen in the morning and we looked at each other and agreed that it was too good an opportunity to miss and that we would set up again in a different place using minimal kit and in one hide. This we did and of course we got very wet indeed but we did add another 61 pigeons to the bag with some pretty good shooting considering the conditions. The attached shot is of a very bedraggled JDog at the end of the day with three bags containing 157 freshly shot pigeons and two very tired but happy dogs. I forgot to add that we estimated that we had eight birds to find in the outlying hedges and despite the fact that we were very wet and tired and the dogs wanted to go home we spent 40 minutes looking for them and we actually found nine. That was as important to us as the shooting. Edited April 14, 2013 by JDog

pigeon controller
Well done for setting up again, we gave up with the soaking we got when the pigeons stopped. Just a question, do you not find plastic bags make the birds sweat??
JDog
Just a question, do you not find plastic bags make the birds sweat?? Yes as a rule they do but we were within a mile of the game dealer and they were all laid out in trays and in his fridge within 10 minutes of the photo being taken. I must say that the birds were very wet indeed by the time we finished.
