Reece
The amount of lead in game meat is not enough to do any harm. Lead occurs naturally in many foodstuffs, often at a higher level than in game meat. Lead does not digest easily, it just passes straight through. A study by an EU body said that the clinically important effects were low to negligible. You also remove lead shot from the meat if you come across any when preparing it. Then you have rifle and air rifle shot quarry, where you only have one bullet, and this one bullet rarely "contaminates" the meat. There are no known incidents of people who eat game meat suffering from lead poisoning, and plenty of shooters and gamekeepers who eat game meat regularly have beem known to live well into old age. Game meat is low in fat and high in protein, so has health benefits. At the moment, it is nothing more than scaremongering. BASC said in their magazine a while back that antis focus on lead shot because it could stop people eating game meat, which is a major defence for shooting. Vince Green
There are worse things than lead in a lot of game birds. Pigeons are the worst apparantly if they feed in areas that have been recently crop sprayed. However, unless you are going to eat them every day its not going to be an issue. Taffyshooter
Its easy enough to remove most lead fragments from the likes of gamebirds. Most shooters/hunters I know do this as part of carcass preparation. Its not hard to do. In any case me and the family have eaten game meat from many sources over the years with no ill affects. Reece
Look in the comments on the telegraph article, there's a good link posted. I seem to remember that some shooters who have eaten game all their lives have been to the doctors to have their blood tested for lead, and found that their blood has a very low lead content, and by that I mean average or below. More shooters should do that and show the results.
Frenchieboy
What a load of old tosh and scare mongering, yet another bit of tripe from the FSA! Maybe it would be quicker and easier for the FSA to tell us what is safe for us to eat! The only time I am ever wary of anything containing any pieces of lead is when it is going to be fed to a Bird of Prey as I believe that they are particularly vulnerable to lead poisoning. As for eating anything shot with lead shot effecting the developement of the brain, I have always eaten game, rabbits and pigeons with a few bits of lead shot in them and just spat the pieces of shot out when I found them and it has not effected my brain - Some might question that though!
