Albert 888
Whats wrong with a .308. Trajectory looks very simular to a. 223 which plenty of people use on fox and small deer. Dont really understand this flat shooting malarkey every calibre bullet wants to hit the floor as soon as its left the barrel and if you a can judge range and dial a scope in no problems. Its the calibre of the man not the riffle. Ps I dont no much about riffles apart from the. 22lr and the. 223.
pestcontrol1
284 win. Never seen or hear of one please tell me more. 284 win. Never seen or hear of one please tell me more. I had"t even thought about it untill i wanted a new cal for everything from long range target work to all deer the odd fox and boar and got talked into the 284 win spoke to people that shoot them and they love um bullets range from 100gn to 180gn i think there is some footage on youtube i have been told that they are beter than the 308 ballisticly better airodinamic with the 7mm over the 7.62 and abit cheaper to run on powder then 308. I dont know to much about it other than what i have read but i know someone who knows more about rifles will come along. But i do know they dont do them straight from factory so would be a custum job or if you have the action and stock a few hundred on a new barrel. ps i will tell you more when i get mine Edited April 22, 2013 by pestcontrol1

welshwarrior
I think I may have the solution then just been offered a PH 308 in great condition nice and straight swap for a scope. I could then keep my 22 hornet with a mtc mamba and put my s&b 8x56 on the 308.

For starters it's dark so range finders are generally out, secondly they rarely hang about that long. The other issue is 308's aren't known for using bullets that break up fast fine daytime and where you can see backstops perfectly but it's a lot of bullet to throw about at night. Bullet choice will affect that but generally the bullets used aren't designed to expand well on small quarry. But the op was after a jack of all trades and depending on foxing done it may be fine

welshwarrior
Yes sounds great but hard to get ammo for and buy in the first place.
njc110381
Sounds like you've got yourself sorted with a reasonable deal there fella. Keeping the Hornet would be a better bet in my mind! Isn't a .284 Win pretty much a 7-08?
Paul223
no quite a bit longer and fatter, pretty sure the case head is the same size but the body is fatter
al4x
the argument all gets a bit questionable once a few hundred for a new barrel gets mentioned, if you can get a new barrel for that I'd love to know where
Underdog
My 308 used Hornady 110grn V max and they broke up easily. Plenty flat to 200 with a zero 3/4" high at 100yds. Around 3100 fps. Slightly up on 243 (acedemic) but most 100grain 243 bullets are tough! U.
