Flashman
this is a working mans thread, keep reading the times mate !!! Good Lord: does that make any sense, or are you perpetuating a stereotype that the epically ignorant don't read a newspaper? That's a rhetorical question, by the way. Vince Green
There was some debate about how the £3.8 millions was worked out, some people are saying even that was overstated. (just to bring the topic back to its original point). The solders sailors etc were already on the payroll and would have to be paid anyway. As was the Archbishop and all the people at the cathedral. That only really leaves police overtime and part of that comes back as tax, the rest goes into the general economy eventually. Most of it went in wages one way or another, is that a bad thing? So where were the real costs to the nation? The TV companies probably sold the footage around the world and made money on it. Former Prime Ministers funerals appear to be quite profitable. Like a lot of things you can read into this whatever you want. The same as a company's annual results for example. Some people will take the view that you have presented above that the majority of the costs were already incurred. Other will look at opportunity cost i.e. if the solder were not doing this they would be doing something else (peeling spuds, polishing boots, whatever) and therefore there is a 'cost' associated with this lost 'opportunity'. A Thatcher lover will take your view. A Thatcher 'hater' will take the 'opportunity cost view.
kdubya
I think it was an opportunity cost KW

Figgy Good old northern mentality, thinking it's the governments job to give you a threepence bottle of milk and not your mum and dads.
figgy
So it's down to our parents to provide a nutritional drink that helps development not the Goverment. But it's up the Government to educate us and not our parents is what your saying. It was nothing but typical Thatcher cost cutting, stealing from children. Is this also just a typical northern thing for kids to get milk,so kids darn sarf didn't get free milk as your all so very wealthy down there. A little secret it's not really grim up North and all rosy down South. Figgy

figgy
So sorry yours was wasn't then, saying Northerners have a set mentality nothing more small minded. Not doing bad for some one who thinks this thread is over and should be closed. You obviously love Thatcher and what she stood for, I don't. Vince Green
My mums side of the family comes from the North East. I love it up there but I am relucutant to go back now because of their attitude. They need to get a life and move on. Mind you the Scottish side of the family is worse. The words "chip" and "shoulder" come to mind. A hundred years from now their great grandchildren will be sitting in the same villages, living on the dole telling each other how it was all Maggie's fault and they were shafted. keg
As a Yorkshireman born and bred, I am embarrassed to say that a number of areas within the broad acres show now flexibility or willingness to change. I remember a quote from a Jamie Oliver programme when he was trying to get schoolkids in Rotherham to eat a more healthy diet. One of the mums said " this is South Yorkshire, we don't do flexibility" Like the dinosaurs, change or become extinct. The only constant is change. Newcastle always seems positive to me, the worst seem to be S Yorks, Liverpool and sometimes the jocks. Please note before anyone complains, these are just generalisations, not aimed at everyone. As always there will be positives and negatives in each area.
