TJ91
Any sea fishers here? What reel do you use? I have both multiplier and fixed spool, seem to do better with the fixed spool. What sort of distance can you cast? I need practise..maybe a few lessons on how to get it 'out there'. Although I have caught a few fish I would be happier just knowing I can get more distance. oscarsdad
Firstly, don't get hung up on distance and always keep safety in mind with a sensible strength shock leader. Most beach anglers will claim to be able to cast a lot further than they really can. 120yds with bait is a good cast. Below 100yds ish there is not much in it between a multiplier and a fixed spool. Beyond that a properly tuned multiplier will cast better every time. As line leaves a fixed spool the angle and therefore resistance of the line to the lip increases as the amount of line on the spool decreases. This does not happen on a multiplier as this factor is not there (a level wind on a multi will drastically reduce distance), in fact the spool is spinning towards the end of the cast rather than accelerating so less resistance. I find multipliers nicer to fish with as they don't rip your finger off and have a lot more winching power if needed than a fixed spool. You also have a more reliable drag which you can set before casting (rather than having to tighten it right up on a fixed spool). I have fixed spools and use them for light short range fishing or feathering, but it is a multi for me for everything else. Penn 525 Supermag being my favourite but also have Abu 6500 Mag Elite, Penn 535 for rough stuff, Diawa Slosh 20 and a little Abu 5500 for bass fishing. Cheapy multipliers are a waste of time, whereas cheapy fixed spools will do the job until they fall apart. TJ91
Any tips on keeping the line level without the level wind. I struggle with that boy when reeling in fast to avoid snags over rough ground.
oscarsdad
Any tips on keeping the line level without the level wind. I struggle with that boy when reeling in fast to avoid snags over rough ground. Just use the thumb from the hand holding the rod to act as a level wind. When you hear your leader knot coming through the Inge make sure you lay it on one edge of the spool then it won't cut your thumb when you are casting. private pike
is your rod rung for, f/s or for mulit, what size is it and what is its casting rateing, the size of the lead used and the size of the line. it can all make a difference in the distance you can cast
colin lad
all the long distance casters use multiplier reels i am yet to see or fish with someone using a multiplier that can out cast my fixed spool reel rod set up (tin hat on) i find fixed spool easier to use and much quicker to use especially after dark colin

aga man
theres nothing to stop you practice casting in a grass field. that way you can pace out your distance and try different set up techniques and set ups etc. personally i use a fixed spool set up but don,t claim to be a distance caster. as said use a quality shock leader. bi9johnny
Set up your rod with a lighter weight inside a tennis ball and practice on the local fields to perfect you technique the tennis ball slows it down a bit. Used to be able to cast 200+ with a zippy bullet and 7ht
goodo123
Quality shock leader, rod designed for your casting style, decent line, decent multiplyer and practice practice practice. I suspect you are getting further with a fixed spool because you trust it more (give it more welly when casting). Also f.s. rods are typically designed differently to be fully loaded with a overhead thump. Go practice with the multi rod combo your likely to use, keep your cast smooth and keep adding a litte more power each time, once your super smooth and at max power increase your drop, (not higher than horizontal tho) and work on more loading before release, then move on to otg pendulum s.African etc. Little differences in your style can make big differences. Also "follow the line out" as it hits the water, this reduces line friction on your rings. Forgot to add as your casting improves try adjusting your brake or mag break (depending on reel). Then when your a pro try the reel bottom of the rod (your left hand in control) with your right giving maximum punch).
Lord Geordie
Another Multiplier user here! Fixed spools are fine for spinning and pier work etc. When it comes to Beach casting I have my ABU. Did have the MAGIII till some **** head stole it. Fishing the Blyth a few year back, the lad on tother side hooked.my gear and pulled the lot in. Rod and reel. Got in his car and ****ed off with my MagIII I.even use a Multiplier when pike fishing. A bait caster. Cracking reel
JDFrain
when i get out i use a multiplier (shimano calcutta 700bsv) cast with the real right down on the butt end find this gives a much better casting technique and allows for a lot more compression in the rod JDF
