Doctors being paid £1350 a shift

I actually had very good service when I needed out of hours medcal support.

I was back in the UK over Christmas. (it wasn't Christmas day but was sometime between Christmas and New Year). had an UTI that I was trying to self medicate but it got worse and by 8 PM was in agony. Rang NHS Direct or 111 (I can't remenber and are they the same thing?). Got through quickly, spoke to a nurse who said they would get a GP to call me. He rang about 10 minutes later and told me to pop up to the local community hospital where he was based. Turned up there about 9pm to an empty hospital where there appeared to be only a nurse and GP on duty (this wasn't A&E as the hospital doesn't have one). I was the only patient. Quick examination, issued with antibotics and a request to send the cheque for the prescription to some company in Surrey. Job Done.

I have no idea how much the GP was earning but the end to end service was first rate.

I know. So many grey areas when all we want is some black and white rant from the Daily Rail.

My sister's experience as a doctor is exactly as described.

I also read an interesting article two days ago. Prior to Obamacare the American healthcare system cost Americans 19% of GDP and left 49 million without cover. The NHS covers everyone and costs 8%

what, in the guardian?

This is just another prime example of why the country is going bust, when you look at the salary of a doctor that is fair enough these costs are extortionate and employment agencies are making the most of them. There needs to be action and a cap put on them and the agencies told to like it or lump it, then the HR and recruitment bods in the hospitals need a boot up the backside and told to sort out staffing and stop relying on agencies at massive rates. Suddenly you free up a heap of cash that means you can have more full time staff and pay overtime when needed to sort out cover,

My 95 year old great aunt has two carers for which she has to pay £16.50 an hour each. Arranged by Social Services. But the care workers are only paid minimum wage. Somebody is making money out of her.

its a fair price to charge someone £33 an hour for two people, but the carers should get a tenner an hour each.

i seriously have mixed feelings about the after hours care available, last year my wife became ill, and was seen within 3 hrs, prescribed and given antibiotics there and then, that's top class in my opinion.

however, i got a rash that we thought was shingles and turned out to be something else, the out of hours service wasn't available, leaving me with no other option than A&E the next morning where i was prescribed an antibiotic that i'm allergic to, and i spent the rest of the weekend on the loo, that's just carp.
