Holland&Holland
Went to Hessen again last week. Again a driven hunt on wild boar, red deer, roe deer, fox and other vermin. This time the expectation was that there would be more wild boar around in this area. That was the case but because of the cold and wet spring there where only few piglets about. The day starts with a get together where all is explained how the day is organised. Then you are escorted to your peg. Normally the hunt starts at 11.00 and at 14.00 it's closed. I was at my spot at 10.05 because it was close by the "get together" point. When you are at youre peg it is allowed to shoot. Especially fox and roe will start to walk when there are people and cars going through the wood. I shot a roe doe at 10.15. She came from the right over a "cut fire alley" high up a ridge in front of me at 80 meters. (lane free of trees to stop forest fires). When i fired she kicked here hind legs back and ran to the right. 10 seconds later a roe doe came past from my right. Didn't see any injury, could shoot it either because it was running and a whistle did not stop it. Found that pretty strange because i was sure about my shot and could not believe it would run that far. You can not leave youre peg untill 14.00 for safety reasons, so had to wait to find out what happened. In the mean time a few red deer came by, and a nice roe buck. Didn't shoot any of them (male red deer cost too much money to my taste and roe bucks where not allowed). Saw no wild boar unfortunately. At 14.00 got down from high seat and started looking for blood. At the spot i found a lot of blood and lung, so was pretty confident the roe had to be dead and laying somewhere. I tought i saw it run towards the right so started looking in that direction. Nothing. Called in a man with a searchdog. Explained everything, dog was set loose. Went straight to the left and after 50 meters found my roe. . So explanation is that there where probably two roes, one behind the ridge at the top and one right at the ridge (the one i saw). Shot one and saw the other run to the right. That probably also was the one running past me at the right. If i could have shot that one i would not have been looking for the other one because i thought there was only one roe. So mistake from my part. So you see you are never too old to learn and you have to look at every situation with great care. Next time i will be giving it a good look round before i draw my conclusions !! By the way, my shot on the roe was placed perfectly, so that was some good news. Long story short. Enclose some pictures of the total shot animals and of a mate of mine who shot a nice wild boar. Hope didn't bore you.....

Holland&Holland
@ stuart p; he shoots with a 7x64
Dunkield
That's quite an unusual (over here anyway) calibre H&H, although the 7x57 seems to be used more and more in the UK.

Peter_HMR
Is there a reason people go for a heart/lung shot over a head/neck/spine shot. I'm sayin im not tryin to start a debate but really i am sorry to hijack the thread. You say your shot was perfectly placed which means your shooting is perfect and you can hit what your aiming at but your not bringing your game down instantly which to me is what its about. When they run after they're shot the meat gets tensed when the beast gets scared and its not as nice. Head shots have been proven to take the animal down instantly with one shot or if you want to keep the head a shoulder/spine shot the animal drops on the spot and theres no fuss Im not trying to criticise you here obviously you take care to place your shot and shoot where your aiming maybe your just aiming in the wrong place

Holland&Holland
@ psittacosis; Turned out i shot the heart of the roe completely to bits, splinters got to the lung and shattered that too. So without a heart this animal still walked 50 meters on adrenaline and the last bit of O2 in the veins. Pretty amazing but with wild boar or fallow deer i have experience that thay can run even further with a deadly shot sometimes. I always go for the heart lung shot, the neck spine shot overhere is not fancied because you want a sure hit and the neck is always a bit tricky over larger distances. They take the loss of meat for granted. In scotland i had to go for the neck because of the venison. Workes out ok, but still if i have a choice i go for the larger body. @ stuartp; 7x64 is quite common in the Netherlands and Germany. Great for bigger game.
