Car tax ran out end of May

Taxed this morning online, it said I would get an email confirmation..how long before the email comes?

And can I drive my car? I obviously don't have a valid tax disc to display but it is taxed..do I have to wait until the disc comes in the post?

you can drive it now and you would be very unlucky to get done for failure to display but that is a risk if you park in public places and in theory the only possible offence. Personally I would print the receipt out for payment and carry that with you if you decide to drive,

Not 'displaying a tax disc' is an offence in itself, so no not really, but I can't think of anyone I know who has been done for it!

DVLA – Improved Customer Service

Release Date: 28/08/2008
Motorists will have greater flexibility when renewing their vehicle tax disc after improvements introduced by the DVLA.

Two changes mean that motorists will have longer to tax their vehicle.

The first of the changes has come about because DVLA has found that towards the end of the month, many motorists taxing their vehicle online or by phone do not complete the transaction when they realise that their tax disc may not be received in time for the 1st of the following month. As a result, from the 1st of September 2008, those buying their vehicle tax online, by phone or by post will be able to legally continue to drive their vehicles for up to 5 days while they wait for their new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply where the new tax disc has been applied for before the current one expires and motorists should continue to display the expired disc on their vehicle, until the new one arrives. This will be of great benefit to those motorists who have to leave buying their tax disc until the last day of the month, because they are waiting to be paid. They can now still do that, but also get the benefits of taxing online, by phone or by post.

i usually print the receipt at the end of the payment screen when renewing and leave it on my dash until the new one arrives, at least if anyone is looking in my windscreen they can see its done although as others have said i am sure a check on the car would flag up a valid tax disc anyway.
