billytheghillie
this has likely been done before, but here goes. thinking of buying a u/lever springer. been looking at air arms and weichrauch, looking at new gun about £350-£400. whats the best calibre to get .177 or.22? what scope should I get? will be used for vermin shooting. thanks guys. fenboy
You will open up the usual .177 v .22 debate , plus the HW v AA debate. I shoot a HW 97 kt in .177 and am very happy with it , extremely accurate and I have never had a issue with lack of knock down with the smaller pellet , though I only head shoot whatever is my quarry . Both makes will do the job as will both calibers so its really down to personal preference.
The Ghost
As above. I have joined a few air rifle forums, just joined weihrauch buy/swap site. https://www.facebook.com/groups/410845995676916/ You will find what you want on these sights as well as on here, may be near you as well. A second hand Weihrauch is a good buy from a good owner. I shoot the HW 97kt .22 good solid gun and no difference to the .177 above with the right shot to the head...they all fall over....dead
-Mongrel-
Can't comment on springers as I don't use one. Calibres? .177 is more forgiving having a flatter trajectory, .22 carries more energy and in theory more knockdown power. I've never yet seen a .177 brain hit rabbit get up and walk away. I think most now accept that either calibre accurately placed will do the job and .177 is easier to shoot more accurately, as such I shoot a .177 and would recommend anyone else to do so. robbiep
A HW77k will, unless you abuse it to hell, still be going strong (and putting pellet on pellet) in 25 years +. Mine was made in 1986, and has spent most of its life in a barn. I checked the grouping on it last week. 5 pellets in a 1 inch circle @ 37 yards, and it is .22. Downside : you need arms like a gorilla to carry the damn thing
NIGHT SEARCHER
I have an HW 97 KT and I thought it was excellent till I had a go with a mates that had been tuned. So I sent mine of to Sandwell field sports for a stage one tune £65. When it came back it was smoother to cock with a lot less re-coil making it more accurate and smoother to shoot. The gun will shoot 5 pence piece groups at 50 yds when I am on form. It`s outstanding. It`s a gun you buy once use it for 30 to 40 years then hand it down to your Son. The Ghost
My HW 97kt is V-mach tuned...awsome and well worth the money, think it was £85 fitted. Not sure if you can pass the cost on if you sell it, but just makes a great air rifle even better. May be an option to look for a tuned air rifle, save you a few bob. http://www.airgunbuyer.com/Showproducts.asp?cat=V-Mach%20Custom%20Tuning&SubCat=V-Mach%20Rifle%20Tuning%20Kits Edited June 25, 2013 by The Ghost

bruno22rf
Do yourself a favour and get a TX200 in .177 flavour-if you can find a dealer that has the HW97 and the TX in stock then go and try them both and buy the best of the 2. Enjoy your TX
fenboy
I guess you guys shoot PCP My 97kt was also tuned by sandwells , I posted this group a year or so ago but will put it on again A 10 shot group , but at 30 yards not 50 I am perfectly confident on taking rabbits at 45- 50 yards in good conditions , a good springer can be very close to being accurate as a PCP , it just needs a better person pulling the trigger
evo
fenboy lets be honest that is very good grouping mate at 30yrds but I seriously doubt you could repeat it at 50 yrds with a springer bouncing all over the place in your arms mongrel what have you started
fenboy
In good conditions at 50 yards I would expect all the pellets to be in the black , which is around the size of a 2 pence piece , yes springers jump around , but once mastered are near on as accurate as a PCP no question I dont want to turn someone elses thread into a springer v PCP debate though. Good, will save me the trouble of responding to your drivel again. Be happy and live long. 5p groups at 50 yards with a springer and not willing to back it up. Make of that what you will.
