why is the 3" more expensive than the 3.5" shells?

They aren't, the 3' (36g) cartridges are about £3 per box of 10, the 3 1/2' (42g) are about £6 per box of 10.

The price confusion comes because the 3' used to be sold in packs of 25, I think they still are outside of the UK.

Nothing beats mammoth 36g #3's for close/medium range duck imo.

I tried sportsman steel and had no luck with them, they felt really badly made, upon firing the cases split down to the brass and the pattern with them was appalling. However pattern is subjective to the gun so try a few and see what you like...

Another vote for the gamebore mammoths.

I use 3 inch 3s for duck over decoys ,..When decoying for Teal they are always so darn close that any cheap steel cart 6s or 5s will do the job !!

But as most of my fowling is coastal or inland ouse washes its always the Mammoths 3 1/2" 3s and 1s

Cost at moment is 50p a shot for the 3 inch shells and 60p a shot for the 3 1/2" shells

£50 for a box of 100 ( packs of 10 ) in 3 inch and £60 for box of 100 (Packs of 10 ) 3 1/2"

But can homelode for about 30p a shot and its a better lode as well !!!!!!! But thats for me only !

You could try Mcleods at Tain, i have not been to their shop for a few years but last time i was in there i went in for some winchester dry locks and came out with a new SX2 and a 250 case of federals cheapest SX2s in the uk at that time. I shot 4 pinks with it the next morning at Castle Stewart i liked that old gun.

I have to say that in this day & age I'm a tad surprised that fowlers still see the need for a 3" or 3.5" steel duck load! Most modern factory 32gr 3.2mm or 3.6mm loads will more than meet the capabilities of any wildfowler that I've ever come across...... But hey ho, if that's what rocks your boat than so be it :)

I will only use 3" on the foreshore as after using many loads over the years I believe anything smaller is just not up to the job, close stuff its ok but when your talking 40yrds not a chance.

Every waterfowling sittuation can present its own set of problems shooting ducks in to a mob of decoys from a maimai is all fine and dandy with your short chamber load, but get the duck leaving the roost in the half light of dawn lets say huging the middle of a river and you will be glad of the extra/bigger pellets a 3 or 3.5 inch load will offer.

Thank you, that's a very nice offer :good: I'll maybe give gamebore a ring and see who they supply and hopefully I'll be able to pick some up.

Cheers again for the offer!

Thanks, I'll give winkies a call and see what they've got in stock. I did try some dryloks years ago and didn't really get on with them. Funnily enough I've never got round to shooting castle Stewart bay and its just along the road!

I've always done well with the gamebore 3" 36gram 1's. Last year, the father in law tried the 3's and now swears by them. I personally think they're not big enough to penetrate the geese on the edge of range so stick to the 1's as a good all rounded.

Adding about the lightning steel, I want to try some this season - that is if anyone ever stocks them!!
