stevekeating
Hi All, I have been shooting this farm for about a year and have had mixed results with my setup in the field pictured. i have two positions and i would like any feedback from anyone who could offer some advice to bring my numbers up. this field is rape at the moment and i am hoping it will be cut tomorrow (sunday). thanks in advance. http://sdrv.ms/1cTuHx7
fenboy
I would open the pattern a little more , for me the magnet in position 1 is in the wrong place , I always want them to get to the decoys before the magnet so would position it to start above the head of the pattern and closer to the hide. But what ever advice you get its no good going with pre conceived ideas of where the hide will be what pattern you will use etc , each day is different and wind direction can change
Chris B.123
I agree.

motty
With regards to the magnet position, i usually place it no more than 20ish yards from me, sometimes as close to the hide as 5 yards.
TIGHTCHOKE
Again, I would bring the magnet in closer to your hide.
THE MEK
Would definitely move the magnet further upwind on position one
JustJon
I always thought the curve of the decoys went the other way ?
fenboy
I always thought the curve of the decoys went the other way ? You have been doing it the wrong way around then decoys should face roughly into the wind so as incoming pigeon land against the wind. JustJon
Guess I've always constrained myself to have my hide with my back to the wind... The few times I've been out
VINCED 686
I would defiantly bring the magnet closer.
sitsinhedges
I always thought the curve of the decoys went the other way ? It does. The 'point' of the curve should be closest to the hide so the birds drop in to the concave area. They seem to be blocking the birds out unless they are coming from behind the hide. If I use a magnet I like to have it well in front of the pattern. Edited August 10, 2013 by sitsinhedges
The Essex Hunter
Hi All, I have been shooting this farm for about a year and have had mixed results with my setup in the field pictured. i have two positions and i would like any feedback from anyone who could offer some advice to bring my numbers up. this field is rape at the moment and i am hoping it will be cut tomorrow (sunday). thanks in advance. http://sdrv.ms/1cTuHx7 Most of the time birds like to come in to the wind....also it looks like a foot path in position 2! so that would be in line with your shooting. Just chuck the decoys out in a random pattern as they do not feed in L,X, Y, ZZ motor way patterns!! Set up within the distance you are confidant to kill them. You need a bit of space for the birds to land in so take account of that when you set up...Don't keep running out pick up birds...! If they keep flaring off then time for a change.. One last thing..Good luck TEH
stevekeating
So I will move the magnet closer to the hide. I would like to have the wind at my back but the road is a factor so that's why I have been in these two positions, the pattern for the decoys does change but the basic shape is correct?? The birds do come in but it was the magnet position I was really unsure of. There are no footpaths across the field but I can see the line in position two does look like one but on this scale the line is a good 200m from the trees. Thanks for the replies they are all appreciated

fenboy
I would start with something like this perhaps Edited August 10, 2013 by fenboy
The Ghost
I would agree on both magnet positions (Fenboy above) and would always be prepared to switch it off depending on bird behaviour. Movement can be the diffence on some days and like Fenboy and others, I have been known to use two magnets with great results...on other days they seem to cause more problems than they are worth. stevekeating
I can see now what you mean, create a channel or space to concentrate them into. Thanks for taking the time to draw me a diagram. If it stops raining I will have a play tomorrow.
JDog
Where is the flight line coming from? If it is out of the wood in the diagram the field you have chosen to shoot may be too close to it.
NickB65
The space you want the pigeons to land in needs to be big enough for them to commit to. I normally have a gap that is 30 yards wide so they can see it is an easy land. The magnet in one is too far out and I would have this at the head of the pattern. Don't get too hung up on shapes like a U or a comma just see how they AR e when you arrive and try and mimic this. If you can get a copy read the book by Archie Coates ...... best book ever and I am reading it again while on holiday.
