grasshopper
Headed back to the farm i shot 2 Fox on last week with Mark (Foxhunter1) as we'd seen at least 8 different Charlies and more fields had been cut. 1st was a stop off at the shoot Mark does the vermin on as Fox scats had been seen near the pen. :o Very few field are cut here so we tried a call near the cover crop as next to it has been re-sown. Mark was determined that his Wam call would finally work tonight(no previous joy)so off he started. There was something,we were unsure what, appeared and just as quick disappeared at the bottom of the field...jury was out and we moved on. 2 fields on overlooking a large opening that dropped away down to the river, and giving us a view of several fields at once, again freshly drilled,he proceeded to try the Wam. After 5 minutes he gave up and tried calling by hand...almost immediately the lamp picked up movement some 60yds below and in front of us.Large Hare thought i at 1st until it turned it's head to reveal the unmistakable diamond shine of Foxy eyes. I dropped to the floor as rifle was set on the bipod ready, picked up the Fox which had now stopped for that fatal last look that they do some 130yds away.X onto it's chest, squeeze of the trigger and, hear the thwack and watch it drop through the scope..very quick and exciting. Got a bit of a surprise when we got there...meet Stumpy Even more curious is that this is the same farm Mark shot a Vixen on last year with a stumpy tail.. hereditary gene or Welfare drop off. And was this what we had seen previously skulking about Onto the next farm to find freshly combined fields as well as freshly cut grass field...and 2 lads lamping that the farmer had given permission to. Quick chat and we were to do opposite sides of the land.Even told us there was no Fox on this land as they'd never seen 1 Unbelievably we saw nothing all night, even doing 2 laps and covering some distance. Met up with the lampers again on there way back who also had seen nothing (rabbits were there target) We had a chat and i asked what x there dog was..Bullx was the answer from the cocky 1.Mark went to tickle the dogs chin and it was terrified...No bull in that, just Bulls - well you know what. To be fair i did tell Mark it's chin was at the other end,but he was having none of it. Typically we packed up and as we were driving out, yup,a Fox on top of the hill looking at us. B725
One of the foxes we trapped had a very small tail it looked like it had been docked as we caught 22 in three months we believed that they had been released in the country park near by. Out 1 night with the .243 and i couldn't pick the Fox as it stopped just behind some long grass so my cousin head shot it with his .22 (fox was only 50yds away) Never picked it but i shot a Fox some 18months later with only 1 eye and the other perfectly healed. They are born survivors and have my upmost respect
