Pole Star
At long last I got out for a morning flight with a local farmer friend on a place that is one of my favorite spots & always gives results so long as idiots don't use it so the location is a secret . The wind was just right for flighting geese off the loch which is far nicer than decoying them & we had a strong south east wind which was perfect so I took up position behind a low concrete wall & piled a few stones on the top to give me a little more cover & sat down behind it & waited . My farmer mate took his position further down wind in a deep ditch between the farm next door which gave him some more options . Well it was not long before they started coming so it was just a wait til some come to me only to my surprise some Greylags were cutting across wind from the direction of another loch & came from behind me & being an old peg leg it was to hard for me to get my butt of the floor & turn to bag one so I just watch them go bye & why not ? there will always be more & I don't want to kill them all like some morons !. Just a bit longer & some came almost right over me & I dropped it stone dead with the 8bore & just after that another stone dead in the air , then I had a shot & missed one but when I went to reload I found the old reload had jammed fast at the cartridge head , just my luck ! , anyway I had 2 & was happy . Then as luckwould have it the ducks started coming off the loch & all I could do was sit & wait till the flight was over while my mate further down in the ditch was still having the odd pop at the Greys & he finished the morning with 4 & left early & left the geese in peace unlike some who come here & sit out all day . I did half think this morning to take my pretty little 20g hammer gun with me to see if I could bag my first duck of the season but decided in the end not to , thats the way it goes but what the hell it was a lovely morning & we had our meat for the table . The gees on the fence were 2 of mine I one my mates that he gave to me & they will be used . They were not black powder jobs like I use mostly although they did leave the tubes a bit on the dirty side . wildfowler.250
Well done, lot more time for that than these folk who shoot heaps and then go again the next day... I don't grudge anyone a good day,(and they do make up for a lot of blanks) but the birds have to be used and it needs to be sustainable. silver pigeon 3
I took my twins out this eve for there 1st flight as they have been asking to come out for ages. We saw quite a few duck but all were just out of range, 2 teal came in low and fast and cleared our heads by only a few feet but were gone well before i had chance to raise the gun. A little while later 3 Mallard came just within range offering a snap shot at the tail bird a good 40 yards out, she dropped like a stone and was retrieved from the tide by the dog. 2 Happy kids and wanting to go out again, sorry about the photo it was taken on the phone. fenboy
I had a quick evening flight on a small drain this evening its between two stubble fields and I had noticed a few duck about when I walk the dogs. Got down about an hour before dark and finished with a hen teal and a mallard , saw quite a few duck but most were a little too high. strangford wildfowler
Out for an evening flight last night on barley stubble 50 yards from the foreshore, was quite dissapointed as olyn seen a flock of mallard about a mile away going in the opposite way from me but a single mallard came bombing over me and my dad not one of us could get the gun up in time before he was away. For my first night flight It was great to be out and I learnt a lot, anyway there is always next time. Happy fowling, Strangford wildfowler.
