wildfowler.250
Well I made an hour and a half trip round to my gun shop. I was after steel 1's for the geese and 3's for the ducks. This is the best I could find... Apparently "the 1 3/8 4's will do for the geese"... Do you think shops just bullsh*t to make a sale? Either way im not particularly impressed...but at least they were cheap... (will use these on ducks) In their defence they did have express steel and sportsman. I've used express before and it's terrible and haven't heard good things about the sportsman. And again, 3's were the smallest size. No wonder folk think steel is p1sh when shops stock such a narrow range of products, at silly prices and recommend using inappropriate shot sizes... tbh I wouldn't have bought the shells if I hadn't made such a long trip round. Opinions welcome. I'm going to buy a mec or something for xmas
edenman
That is why i reload you can make the shells you need/want
wildfowler.250
I'll be joining you shortly! I'm as miffed with the fact that they recommend 4's for geese to folk as I am with the lack of supply..
edenman
Yes that does seem quite poor. The person selling them most likely has never tried to kill a goose with steel 4s.
Breastman
Are they UK #4 shot or US? As if US thats a buckshot load over here! Between AAA and SSG
wildfowler.250
U.S but think that's the same as a uk 3?
scolopax
A couple of years ago i was in a gun shop buying a rifle on the 31st of August. There was a bit of rush in the shop before the season opened the next day, with three separate folk in the queue in front of me, all buying shells for 'a go at the geese tomorrow', all were sold lead 1's, this was in England, no mention of non toxic by either party in the transactions!! wildfowler.250
A couple of years ago i was in a gun shop buying a rifle on the 31st of September. there were three separate folk in front of me, all buying shells for 'a go at the geese tomorrow', all were sold lead 1's, this was in England, no mention of non toxic by either party in the transactions!! At least they would be effective Think most shops will just blag anything to make a sale! Out of interest. 1 1/8 be okay for the duckies? The heavier load will be fine 4 for Geese!!! I use No1 in steel for duck!!! Exactly..
Breastman
U.S but think that's the same as a uk 3? AH yes, the yanks have a #4bird and a #4buck

steve0146
Wont mention the shop, but went to buy some bismuth two years ago and the owner told me they are a waste of money and stick to lead..who is going to know?? I pointed out it was illegal and he should not be giving advice like that. Never went back. Tell a lie.. I did go back to have a gun RFD to them, and they wouldn't do it. Terry P
I've heard those drylock are quite good cartridges but for that price I would want it to retrieve the bloody duck for me lol. As for the guy in the shop clearly he's a clown. I'm in the same boat as you for having to travel for cartridges but have just ordered all the stuff for home loading, not cheap but at least I will have shells on tap and in the long run no more expensive than factory to make. motty
While the Drylocks you were sold aren't ideal, they will still kill close to medium range pinks ok. Keep the ranges sensible and you will be fine with them.
Guest cookoff013
4 for Geese!!! I use No1 in steel for duck!!! that is an exellent choice. even if the shells go 1300fps. reloading steel is the way to go. although i`ve spotted a shortage of BB steel. everyones max is B

Doriboy
A little piece of advice if you're going to start reloading, don't bother buying a mec straight off, all you really need is an RTO tool, I have a mec but you can do it all quite easily without. Try loading some duck and goose loads with new cases and see how you get on. Then maybe go on from there. Check out http://www.claygame.co.uk Good luck
edenman
I agree doriboy, also a lee loqdall is a cheap option too.

In fairness I use my rifle powder droppers, scales even an arbour bench rest type press etc and it does just fine. I should buy a press if I used a lot of shells but I think the most I have ever fired on the marsh is 20 in a day (that is about 1hr on the kitchen table)
