good flight line sport

Teamed up with fello pigeon watch member Tan this afternoon for some shooting over a barley stubble.

the birds were not on the stubble in any numbers but a good flightline has been crossing over the field for the last few days. we set up in a bale hide and put out 6 dead birds on cradles. the birds in the area have been tricky to decoy lately and there food is plentiful.

the hope was to try and pull birds to the decoys from the flightline. we couldn't get onto the field till 2pm due to work etc and as we arrived the birds were returning on the flightine back to the city. there was a good breeze which brought the birds lower and our plan seemed to work to an extent although the birds did not commit to decoys, as our decoy pattern grew the birds came in range for a look. we took turns to shoot and enjoyed some fine sporting shots. to be able to drive to your hide and shoot such sporting birds in shorts and t-shirts was a real treat.

the use of a magnet and a flapper made no real difference to the approaching birds so we turned them off to save battery power. the shot pigeons were stuffed full or rape seed and to our knowlegde the nearest rape field is up to six miles away.

we packed up at 6pm with a modest bag of 36 woodies and a couple of rooks but we felt each bird shot tested our skill and provided top sport. we had about 30 shots each.

personally i would rather shoot 30 birds this way than 100 over decoys.

that's what its all about in my mind the big bags are good but I have and others have enjoyed countless days coming home with between 20 and 100 shot on flightlines or at roost with no decoys at all :good:

A special afternoon for the two of you. To shoot 36 pigeons in this way is an excellent result.

Two weeks ago I posted about shooting a 'return line'. It is just so exciting if you get in the right place which you can do when there are bales in the field. As others have said flightline shooting beats decoying hands down - but there is never enough of it!

Completely agree :good: A smaller bag from some good shooting is much more enjoyable than double the amount from the suicide brigade  Its what its all about, not just Pest Control :good: Good day, well done :good::good:

I agree high passing shots are great , the trouble is if you get your decoying right they tend to commit way out and the only way I have found to make it better shooting is to put some Angels at the front of the patter to spook them and they flare and you get a better shot. Big bags gets you the reputation which in turn gets you the invites to shoot other land. No true hunter wants to shoot a flying bird on the ground.
