painting pigeons

Mossy, you will need to expand a little.

Are you retouching old decoys or are you making your own from scratch? Which ever, it is not easy to match colours like those found on a wood pigeon.......think of grey velvet that blends into irredescent indigo/violet. However I seem to remember reading that old hands used to paint milk bottles any light grey matt that was available, and adding two white stripes. It worked too.

I use those homebase tester pots at around a quid each. All matt, Slate grey, Mocha for the pinkish front, matt black for the obvious black bits, matt white for the neck bars and a dulux tester in expresso. Its a brown and if you lighten it a bit with the matt white, it does the wings and over the back. It helps if you have a dead bird nearby to match the colours. These are a bit tired as have done 3 seasons and are due for a repaint.Hope this helps.

I have some transparent uv liquid I have made has anyone tried coating there birds with anything on these lines ???

I think I might do 8 and try them the next time I'm out worst case is I'll have to repaint them as the only way you can remove it is solvent...

+1 for Homebase tester pots. I use the matt bathroom emulsion paints. They do the job well and if they need a touch every now and then, and who doesn't, they are cheap enough. To put a colour layer over the top I use transparent acrylic paint from an airbrush.
