Mungler
They are a pile of bling poop. Mate had one - what went wrong? The 'what went right' list would be shorter. He chopped it in to some unsuspecting dealer after the 2nd gearbox failure. Think again.

four-wheel-drive
I have never liked the look of the Patriots myself I have got an old cherokee XJ have you thought about a mk 2 Cherokee diesel I think that they are quite good and do not look so boxy. Mungler
I can't find a single credible review site that says anything good about the Jeep Patriot. I think that covers it all
delburt0
Had the grand Cherokee mint motor all the toys good in the field, rear diff went 1 k to rebuild ( independent transmission garage but said it might go again ) £3k from jeep, needless to say I blocked it, shame but it has put me off for life as there a lot of motor for the money but get digging deep if anything goes wrong, I would not have another due to this at the back of your mind all the time :(

phil123
I had a patriot for about a year. 2.4 petrol - was great....... Never missed a beat, cost me nothing, no problems etc. I agree with mungler, there's not a lot of good reviews but I prefer to make my own mind up about things. I never got stuck in the field, and the best think was passing other '4x4's' that were stuck in the snow! Go for the limited edition, they have everything on them but are still pretty basic inside ( plastic ) but to be honest it just made it easier to wash out...... Cheers Phil
thepasty
Jeeps are ****, expensive to buy (for what you get), expensive to fix (and most WILL need fixing before their time), horrible cheap interiors etc. Why buy something like that when you can get a much better truck for the same money. I'd go jap....cant go wrong.
HDAV
Rav4, mitsi outlander, xtrail, all worth looking at for that money
Flashman
The Patriot was "built" cheap to give Jeep an entry-level 4x4.after the old Cherokee was discontinued. You get what you pay for... I had an old shape Cherokee back then and looked at Jeep when it was time to move on. The Cherokee was very reliable. but the parts prices were steep. Everything the the Sterling match of the US Dollar, so an oil filter was USD20 in the States and GBP20 over here. Also, the 4.0l Cherokee had a decent 4x4 system fitted, where the 2-ish litre Cherokee and some of the Patriots had a basic, part-time 4x4 system fitted. Again, made cheaper for a reason. Go Jap for cheap, bomb-proof motoring.
shootgun
looks like i'll go Jap after all, as i'm currently driving a Honda and my gf a Mitsubishi, and never had a problem whit any of them... Thanks for the feedback so far chaps!

thepasty
no... I know 3-4 people that have had Cherokees, Patriots etc, I'd ridden in most, I've heard them whine about the how often things go wrong and I've heard them talking about the cost of thing that go wrong. Plus you only have to look on the net to see many reviews/opinions on Jeeps to know you should stay away from them. As a consumer I go on my own and others experience, I'd be a fool not to listen to them.
rwade545
A lot like peoples beloved landrovers then that are always broken down but people dont stay away from them? Jeeps have a personality of their own. Had a landcruiser that gave up the ghost after oil and fuel pumps stopped, and no it wasnt old or high milage, a shogun that required a full engine rebuild after under 100k, a Mercedes that had a suspension failure after 65k, and a citroen that fell apart at 30k.Any car can fail, and will do eventually. I have a new wrangler and so far has been more reliable then most other cars i have owned. Love the look and drives better than a defender, and feel likes an adventure even if just going to the shops. If you like a car get it, if it comes with a warranty then you have that back up. And no I am biases against Japanese cars, my favourite is my 95 pajero in africa 250k miles, 1x engine rebuild at 200k miles, 1x props haft, more sets of springs and shocks then i can remember and pulled pretty much every car out of the mud, only stuck once ( sister got hold of it after I left). I no... Fisherman Mike
If your looking for a dual purpose vehicle with real off road capability then your really need something with a proper low range 4 wheel drive....don't laugh or listen to the ridicule of others but consider a old style Grand Vitara... There is no other dual purpose vehicle that comes close to their off road capability, the power to weight ratio is perfect for off road work and it will take you where other dual purpose SUV's can only dream of going ( perhaps the scoobys give them a run ) I have had several over the years as has my wife it takes something exceptional to stop them like a volcanic eruption or an avalanche ...even the power train on the little jimny would put many so say 4X4's to shame. I first drove one at the Cirencester Park trials sponsored by Pebbly Beech some years back and it quietly went about its work and tanned the *** off your Range rovers, Discoveries and other specialist 4 x 4 vehicles. They are the springer spaniel of the SUV world and can do everything extremely well. Servicing costs are reasonable and reliability is not an issue. We all have stories about pulling this and that out of 5ft of mud and overtaking a Landrover in a snow drift and most of them should be taken with a pinch of salt as nothing can cope with extreme conditions...but I recall about 10 years ago when moving between drives at a local shoot in the hilliest of countryside only two of us made the brow on the final drive me with 4 up in a 2.5 V6 GV and some chap in a ex German army fourtrack !!! There was some pretty expensive hardware that had to turn around and take to the tarmac...the best part was I was first to the sloe gin, whiskey mac and Pasties You could find a real low miler and still have change for a little sports car. caeser
I've got this thing in the back of my mind telling me that the 2 litre diesel version is the VW diesel engine. If that is the case then thats a well proven engine, so whats wrong with that. But in all honesty, this is my completely unbiased opinion, spend the 8k on a Toyota. I could go on here for hours, but thats the bottom line.
