Guys , I've got an old 301 that has just started not to recycle. I've had this gun for years with no problems and recently it's started to mess me about!

I took it to a gunshop and asked them to look at it for me, picked it up today after they had it for a month

and asked them what they had done, and they had replaced the bush held in by the circlip at the end of the piston/cylinder, those with a beratta will know what I mean,

Anyway got it back and thought I'd try it, Still not working in fact no *****y different,

Have any of you got any suggestions of what I can look at or for before I go back with it, It cost me £60 to get nothing done <_<

Hope somebody has some sensible suggestions.

Cheers

If they haven't fixed take it back and ask them to do it right if they say they have ask them what the test fired it with then use the same ammo. Bet they will offer you to fix it properly.

Get it stripped and cleaned, lightly oiled etc. See how she goes with a few heavy carts. If it don't cycle completely then half the action is broke, the recoil spring that I believe sits in the stock and pokes the actiob forward after a shot. These wear out, not much else does. I'm sure it will be alive and kicking again shortly.

I'll Try my best to describe it chaps. As i said before I've had this gun for years and had no problems, when it started to go wrong I noticed that the spent cartridge was getting caught in the breach. with the bolt closing on it leaving it half in and half out and thus not letting the next cartridge up. Then it seemed to work sometimes and not others. Recently it's been fireing the first shot only, and when you pull for the second you just get the firing pin clicking on the empty cartridge that is still there. I can't see if the bolt slides back and does not eject or if the bolt doesn't slide back at all because I'm looking at the target.

As I said earlier the recoil spring returns the (keeper)? fine and when stripped down I can push the spring into the stock all the way with a dowl and it pushes right back again, it all seems to work properly when you work it by hand , but not when fireing the gun . Oh by the way I use 32grm cartridges.

Underdog to answer your questions, 1, no, 2, no 3, no Sorry not much help am I

GingerCat,

The recoil spring has never been replaced as far as I am aware, When I take it back I will ask him to check it. Makes me wonder if they know what they are doing, don't want to chuck good money after bad ,thats why I thought I'd ask the question.

Hi Tonker, sounds to me that there isn't enough gas being bled off, even though you're using 32g shells. The fact that it's been getting gradually worse suggests to me that the 2 barrel vents are clogged thus restricting gas flow. In my experience if the recoil spring is at fault then the 'fresh' cartridge sits on top of the carrier but does'nt chamber, please let us know how you get on.

Poke a pipe cleaner thru the bleed holes, see what come out. My gun is newer but its the same principle. If it fires and ejects but the problem is the reload then it may be the recoil spring or flappy thing that lifts the shells. good clean normally sorts but I know those springs are never changed and cause untold problems until they are. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi Remmyman, thanks for that I'll check the vent holes tommorrow . But i could see light coming through them when shining a torch.

I'm not saying they're blocked, just restricted. I clean them by using some stiff wire inserted through the hole on the underside of the piston housing, I presume that's what it's there for?

A thorough clean, especially the barrel recoil ports, then a LIGHT oil, many have mentioned this here, but I guess you will have done all that before you took it for repair originally!

If that does not work (actually even if it does) just take it back, they already have your money for fixing it but haven't.

That sound right to me I've got a few broken semis working for people over years with a thin piece of wire and a little time any reduction in port size will effect the gun but lots really messes them up.

As said by others here clean the ports.

Two cold januarys ago a feller was using a Beretta auto on beaters day and it started to fail to cycle. When asked to take a look working the bolt it felt sticky. Turns out all the oil had gummed up with gas residue and was rstricting the moving parts. Scrounged some wd40 and it worked fine. The wd losend the thing gunge.

Consider this with yours!

I never over oil an auto, gas residue, powder flakes and grit all stick to it.

could be an idea but not sure on berettas as it happend on my escort when i had one! the extractor, the thing that pulls the cart back when it has been fired was worn, sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldnt, as i said not sure if berettas have them but i would assume so, it looks like a little latch thing on the side of the bolt, have a look with some snap caps how it works and manually pull the bolt back

Thanks for all the replies lads, sorry I haven't replied to any of you today but I had a funny five minutes.

I was at my Bike club AGM, head started swimming felt sick as a dog,and the next thing i knew was That the paramedics were fussing all over me,and it was an hour later!!.They wired me up to an ecg machine and was sweating like a pig. Apparently Blood pressure had dropped stupidly and sats (watever they are) weren't on the scale. Long story short oxygen mask on and started feeling a bit better after 15 mins. I had hells own work to convince them not to take me to hospital in the ambulance. Docs tomorrow for check up!. My mates took my keys off me so I couldn't ride home, but in truth I wouldn't have been that stupid,

Thanks for all the tips again lads and I'll pit them into practice tomorrow.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on (with the gun! Hope you're feeling better and able to test it out..). Friend of mine has a a303 which isn't playing the game. I'm fairly certain it's what's been described here with the gas ports being blocked. I can't get my hands on it to check, it's in the 'smiths having money spent on it..

I've offered him £50 to take it off his hands, I'll sell it him back for £100 if I fix it!

Hi, Guys

Just to say a big thank you for all your tips. I took everything apart and checked it, ports were clean could only get a little carbon out of them(and I mean specks) Nothing else jumped out at me that looked wrong, so gave it another clean although it already was. The only thing I added this time was a bit of Legia spray to everything and then a wipe off, Just been down the farm now and it recycled fine :yahoo:

The reason I hadn't been oiling it was that I thought it would gum up, or that's what I was told way back.

I'm very surprised it's taken this long to go wrong. Anyway many thanks to you all again.
