biketestace
Now then. During a floodlit shoot last night, this question was asked, "why does a home load spit more flame-flash, than a factory cartridge ?" My reloads are spot on to data and have been chrono tested etc Any suggestions ? Bta
sitsinhedges
Maybe a slower powder is still burning
rem708
99% sure its a slower powder and this has no relation to velocity
russian sniper
Yep you need a faster powder or a longer barrel
fortune
or a bit better crimp pressure. Some carts have the crimp center melted together. I remember that some Winchesters had this
biketestace
Im using Vectan AS and S4N
Guest cookoff013
this is easy, its the pressure of the cartridge, either there is incomplete burn of the powder, and the gas is flushing out smouldering powder that has nt burned due to inneficient pressure. the powder should be all used up in the chamber. AS even though its fast still needs pressure to completely burn it up. even my new superfast powder needs pressure to burn it all up, but it can probably do it at lower pressures. now depending on the minimal pressure that the powder burns efficiently at, and the length of the pressure curve (length as in micro seconds) will have a great impact on cartridges. the main aspect that can insure the fuel / powder is all eaten up is pressure. more pressure = cleaner load. cook. kent
Actually fit a ported choke and shoot at night and you notice most have some flash to them. All the hot steel shells I shoot flash, factory or home loads
deershooter
It's because you are loading 24 gram with As it wants 28-30 for proper burn swap me for as24
biketestace
What AS recipe are you using? 20 grains AS to 25.5 grams lead this gives me 1350fps. 21.5 grains S4N to 28 grams lead. Im using T2 wads on both
sitsinhedges
20 grains AS to 25.5 grams lead this gives me 1350fps. 21.5 grains S4N to 28 grams lead. Im using T2 wads on both The AS is quite low, it's usually 21grains to 28/30 grams of shot. It might be that you're not getting very high pressures as a result. Not that it matters if it works for you, I used to use 21 grains to 24 grams of shot quite happily and it cycled my 391 quite happily. Floating Chamber
Are you using a hot primer, like a CX2000, m688, G1000 or F616?

biketestace
Are you using a hot primer, like a CX2000, m688, G1000 or F616? Yes mate,CX2000 & F616 Just for reference, The last 8kg of AS I had was showing up to 1650fps when I used the standard data recipe, I got 18.5 grains to show 1250fps !? Using my Mec,i reloaded 19 grains and had a great cart, but, Iv plumped for 20 grains when using the PW progressive as these also work well in my semi auto,

I'd be rechecking my scales and my chrono. All of those speeds seem way too fast for the amount of powder quoted.

Dekers
"why does a home load spit more flame-flash, than a factory cartridge ?" Home and Factory have nothing specific to do with it, as already mentioned above, there are LOTS of recipes for home and factory loads, if both were loaded the same, the flash would be the same. The vast majority of loads will produce a muzzle flash regardless, and some shotgun flashes are incredible.
sitsinhedges
Maybe the OP should try some Baikal Record cartridges then you'd know what a proper muzzle flash and report is
