Salizar
May I suggest a light weight break barrel springer, maybe .177 calibre, it`s the first real gun I had when I was 9 years old, also I used one (Original model 27) to teach my son at age 8 how to shoot and all about safety. He moved on to shotguns when he was 14 years old. I feel with the one shot then reload of the break barrel, it gives them more awareness of gun handling before the next shot. IMO, JB
Nikk
I don't see how shooting an air rifle will do much to help if you are planning to get the son in to shotguns. It's going to teach him to do all the wrong things isn't it? Looking down the barrel, closing one eye etc.

Nikk
I guess some people are more adaptable than others How does shooting a rifle teach you anything about a shooting a shotgun? If the guy is keen to get the lad shooting clays/game then I'd just wait unless they're both mad keen on the rifles as well.
steve_b_wales
How about a Hatsan Junior? A friend of mine bought one for his nephew and it's excellent, according to him.

Teaching a youngster with a break barrel air rifle (Or any other type of air rifle come to that) may well not be of any use to the lad if and when he takes to a shotgun in how ever many years time I agree, but what it will help to teach the lad is the most important thing that every single person needs to know while shooting or handling a gun, GUN SAFETY, something that I am sure you will agree is the most important thing that anyone should learn when starting to shoot and something that you could never be too young to learn! happy.plinker
An air rifle is the ideal learning tool I believe, everyone I know that shoots started with one. My son had a Cometa 100 .22 with auto safety catch,it wasn't the best out there but ideal for him, one day the safety catch failed and I told him of the mechanics and how NOT to trust them 100%, he still talks about it and will never forget it. Also it's the whole where to point them, backdrop ,clean kills etc. He moved on to a .410 then a 12bore, I'm not saying he will never have an accident but hopefully the chances have been reduced. HP. malantone
used to stand my 8yr old twin grandsons (18 yrs ago) behind a chain link fence (dog kennel) rest the HW35 in the fence and let them plink away, I had to load the rifle for them. malkiserow
I would say a cheap light springer in very good working order. If he continues and is interested then review and maybe buy a quality air gun
GingerCat
Pretty sure there is a nice little hw, maybe a 25, that would fit the bill perfectly and is purpose built. Yep googled it, it is an hw25, neighbors son had one, I was very impressed.
FalconFN
I've got a Chinese B2 that I got free from MM on here - not sure where he's gone. I got it working and lowered the power so it now shoots at 4.5 ft lbs which makes it easier to cock and will teach my kids gun safety with very little risk of damaging anything, including themselves. If he's like my kids he will be happy just to knock over some cans at fairly close range so an expensive, highly tuned rifle will be a waste of money. Whatever rifle you get you will have to be prepared to cut the stock down quite a bit otherwise he won't be able to use it, so go for a cheapy chuck-away gun first, then as he gets I to it you can upgrade. 955i
I am looking into the SMK junior range at the moment, seem to be just about small enough for him to use and cheap enough too. Will probably wait to get it until his 7th birthday in March to give him a bit of extra growing time
