iain
Easy to do, but. If you DIY it, IT will make a right mess. I did mine but round at a mates so he had all the mess !!!!!

The pad has to be a grind to fit pad by the way - if not then they normally don't sand well at all. ATB
kent
A handy guy can learn this after 3 or four guns, if its your first and a nice gun don't! I have done quite a few now and know quite a few tricks but some of the early ones were a bit rough and ready
iain
I used a belt sander in a workmate. Made a right mess!! Stock came out all right.
station
I did my first one with a 4" angle grinder fitted with a P50 fibre disc ! To be fair after finishing it with a block and paper it did the job - I was about 17 at the time and working in a garage. We all start tinkering somewhere. Zx12rash
I've only got a disc sander and reckon it would be a right ball ache doing it like that. For this one I'll get someone else to do it. On a cheapo sabel i have I'll give it a go

Zx12rash
Might have to give it a go. No chance I'm paying £40-£65 to have a guy grind a pad down.
bodach
Aye £60 is the going rate to sand to fit the stock, tip is to put a couple turns of masking tape around the wood so if you slip the tape will act as a buffer, just replace the tape and start agian. Wish I had bought the belt sander on offer in Aldi in the summer, £28 and Iwould have saved £32 and have another power tool! Bod.

CaptainBeaky
Did the one on my semi auto with my belt grinder - started with a clean new 40 grit ceramic, then onto 120g zirconium, and finished on a 400 silica. Lots of masking tape to protect the stock, and took it slowly. Ok, it wasn't the neatest job I've ever done, but acceptable for a first go, and better than paying someone else half the value of the gun to do it for me! Most important bits - clean, sharp belts, making tape and patience. If in doubt, practice on a piece of scrap wood first - one a similar size and shape to your stock. Zx12rash
Well I took it to a chap who polishes metal for me. He made short work of it and got it close so that I can finish it with my sander. Oh and it cost me **** all
deershooter
It's when you finish it with your sander you ****** up the stock good luck post the pictures when you have finished Deershooter
defender
I did mine off the gun, turned out good enough for a Baikal and made it much more comfortable to shoot
Darno
I just did my first one! Watched a YouTube video and clamped my random orbital sander to one of my trestles and it came out really well. Was well happy, I did re oil the stock aswell tho so I didn't have to worry about touching it with the sander Edited December 15, 2013 by Darno
ChrisAsh
Why on ert would anyone do it on the gun, just fit it to the gun and scribe around wood, then remove and take down to nearly at the scribe, then file or rasp and try fit until perfect
Paulywauly
I put a Pachmayr pad on my Miroku exactly as ChrisAsh describes. Very easy, no danger to the stock and perfect fit. Just take your time.

So here is a carp photo Like I said, the extension is a bit rough, as it is my first, and was knocked up from bits out of the Box of Useful Items. The belt grinder is usually used for making stuff like this or this.
